Greg Parent NEW RICHMOND, Wisc. (September 26) - With summerlike weather conditions, the second night of the first Badger State Nationals took place on Friday September 26 at the Cedar Lake Speedway. The FYE Motorsports promoted program featured some truly outstanding main event racing action for the field of 123 cars on hand at the 3/8 mile high-banked Wisconsin speedplant. When the last lap of racing had been completed, race fans had witnessed some of the very best feature racing seen at CLS in quite some time in the street stock and Midwest modified mains. Earning hard-fought victories tonight in the street stock division was popular female driver Chanda Fjorden-Nord while veteran racer Bob Smith topped an incredible battle in the Midwest modified main. Joel Cryderman turned in a solid performance passing Don Shaw on lap 8 of the late model feature race enroute to victory while Joel Wyttenbach came out ahead of a great two car battle for the win in the Legends feature.
Four heats for the 35 late models would see Jim Carlson lead the first two laps of the opening heat until Joel Cryderman blasted by for the win to finish in front of Cory Mahder ten laps later. Pat Doar led all 12 laps in the second heat over Don Shaw. Rick Hanestad and Eric Breeschoten traded the lead four times in the first four laps of the fourth heat race until Hanestad took over for good.
The fans had already witnessed three great feature races, but it was now time for the rumble of the big late models to take center stage for their 25 lap preliminary feature race. Again, one of the top five all-important finishing positions would earn a driver a starting spot in the big championship feature race on Saturday night paying $12,000 to win. Don Shaw blasted into the lead from his outside front row starting spot with Joel Cryderman in tow. Shaw set a fast pace on the cushion until he drifted a bit high in turn 3 on lap 9. Cryderman seized the opportunity and took the lead. Shaw recovered to run a close second as the leaders slowly began working their way towards lapped traffic. As the leaders worked traffic just past the halfway mark, Cryderman made a tremendous move to split two lapped cars and put a little distance between himself and second place. Once Shaw and third place runner Pat Doar cleared the two lapped cars, they closed in on Cryderman. Cryderman, making his first CLS appearance of the season, knows his way around the 3/8 mile oval very well though. With the laps clicking by, Cryderman continued to lead over Shaw, Doar, Jeff Hinkemeyer and Duane Mahder. Doar tried several times to get underneath Shaw exiting turn two but could not. On the final lap, Shaw jumped the cushion in turn two and Doar drove by. At the checkers, it was Joel Cryderman earning the win over Pat Doar, Don Shaw, Jeff Hinkemeyer and Jeff Wildung. Duane Mahder had held the coveted fifth place spot until the final corner on the last lap when he jumped over the cushion and lost two spots. The race ran 25 laps nonstop to the finish with only one car dropping out.
