PETALUMA, Calif. (September 20) - Fighting a troubling steering problem and fending off the night's fastest qualifier were just two of the obstacles Jeff Decker had to conquer in last Saturday's 29th annual Maselli Dirt Late Model Classic but the wily veteran from Morgan Hill, relying on his driving prowess found a comfortable line on the bottom of the superbly groomed 3/8-mile clay oval to turn back the challenges and prevail in the $2500-to-win, 40-lap event at Petaluma Speedway.

"The track was really hooked up but my car was too tight all night long, it was darting around so I just held it on the bottom," said a smiling Decker after the thrilling, narrow victory over Brad Pounds of Bakersfield and Santa Rosa's Anthony Restad. "It's great to be back at Petaluma."

Pounds, whose qualifying time of 14.680 was just .034 seconds off the track record ran a tight third for most of the race behind Restad, whose relentless pressure kept Decker on alert the entire race. The 23-year-old Pounds seemed to catch Restad napping when he leaped past him into second place on a Lap 29 restart. Pounds threw a scare into Decker before finishing in the $1500 runner-up spot over Restad, who earned $1000 for third place.

Former four-time Maselli Classic winner John Silva of Fremont, who battled Petaluma Speedway's all-time Late Model victory leader Rod Arnold for nearly the entire race, grabbed fourth place from Arnold with three laps remaining to score the $950 payoff, and Petaluma's Nick Perivolaris got by Arnold one lap later to finish fifth and collect $900.

Rounding out the top-10 were Arnold, 2008 Petaluma track champion Paul Guglielmoni, Rick Shafer, Richard Papenhausen, and Kellen Chadwick of Oakley who was competing for the first time since suffering severe injuries in a crash last February.

Twenty-two cars qualified for the Maselli Classic considered the longest running Dirt Late Model event in California. Helping bolster the purse were supporting sponsors Victory Auto World, Michael Paul Co., and BRC Race Cars.
