Ronnie Williams LEBANON, Mo. (September 19) - Current leading Rookie Of the Year Contender on the DLRA Late Model Series Jesse Stovall grabbed the opening lead and then had to hold off repeated challenges from Team Phillips drivers Jeremy Payne and Terry Phillips to capture the opening night of the I-44 Speedway Fall Shootout Friday night on a racing surface that provided plenty of side by side action.
Stovall grabbed the early lead from pole Setter Duke Whisnant only to see that lead erased as Terry Phillips, Bill Frye and a host of others got together in turn 4. Whisnant, debuting a new GRT car pulled into the pits putting Phillips to the pole spot with Stovall on his outside. On the restart, Stovall grabbed the opening lead with Phillips working the low groove as the duo ran side by side with Bill Frye and Will Vaught battling. On lap 11, Leroy Johnson came to a halt on the backstretch bringing out the only other yellow. On the restart, Phillips went backwards as Frye shot to the top groove and moved into second place as Jeremy Payne was on the move quickly. With Stovall using the top line, Payne started his charge down low and pulled even with Stovall as they battled hard as Terry Phillips started his forward movement again. On lap 15, Stovall moved to the bottom of the track as Payne had made up several cars with Phillips moving closer to the lead duo as Brandon McCormick and Bill Frye were battling for forth place. With Stovall still setting the pace, Payne had tried several times to go below to take the lead but Stovall was hanging on to the lead. On lap 23, Payne moved upstairs as did Stovall while Terry Phillips had closed-up and the top 3 were all together. Heading for the white flag, Payne pulled even with Stovall as Stovall had the right rear planted on the top groove as Phillips was going to the bottom of the track as they were three wide. Payne pulled even with Stovall in turn 3 and in turn 4 Stovall kept right on the top groove to hold off the charges by Payne and Phillips in capturing his 3 DLRA feature and his second DLRA/MARS Challenge event at I-44 as McCormick nipped Frye for fourth place as 14 cars stayed on the lead lap.
