CUMBERLAND, Md. (September 5) - Matt Sponaugle defended his George Hilliard Memorial title as the track championship picture cleared up on Friday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

Sponaugle pulled off a pass on Tim Smith Jr. and led the final 12 laps in the Limited Late Model feature. The win was his third of the season and helped strengthen his points lead in the penultimate event of the regular season.

Wade Peer took his sixth straight win to capture the first Factory Stock 6-Cylinder title in the final race for the class. Marcius VanMeter clinched the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock title by winning another time with one race left.

Chris Chamberlain and Brandon Powell also took class wins. The remaining championships will be decided this week for the Late Models, Sunoco Street Stocks and Factory Stock 6- and 8-Cylinder divisions.

Sponaugle started third and worked up to second when Dave Troutman and Smith briefly touched in turn one on the start.

Smith was able to pull out to an eight car length lead. A caution on lap six set up the race for the lead between Smith and Sponaugle over the next two laps.

Sponaugle got to Smith's outside in turn four when the green waved again. The two continued side by side until the next trip through turn four. Sponaugle drove off with the lead.

Sponaugle led by as much as two seconds after the final caution on lap 13. His lead held through the finish over Smith. Steve Axtell Jr. was third but later disqualified in a technical mix-up. Jamey Swank, Mike Altobelli Jr. and Daniel Cornman rounded out the revised top five.

The Rock will conclude its regular season on Friday, Sept. 12 and host The Big Kahuna VIII for the MACS Super Late Models on Oct. 2-4. For more information, visit The Rock's web site at www.therockspeedway.com.
