Willamette Speedway ORRVILLE, Ohio. (August 16) - Mike Lutz made the tow from Sharon Pa. and scored a hard earned Spurgeon Chevrolet Sprint win over a hard charging Duffy Smith to become the third different winner at Wayne County in only the fourth Sprint Car event to date this season. The preliminary heat race went to Jason Dolick and the dash fell to Broc Martin but it was Tim Hunter that not only set fast time of the night but also a new track record at 15.413 seconds around the tacky 3/8ths mile clay oval. In the Santmyer Oil Late Models, Chet Alexander and Allan Baker claim heat wins, Ryan Markham was best in the dash, and Corey Conley clocked the fastest time. The feature event was tightly contested between Doug Drown and Keith Berner with Drown the victor. Great racing all through as the Thrifty Muffler Pure Stocks gave the fans a great show with Jose Marsh and Travis Mensching taking heats and Troy Anderson added a 2008 Wayne County feature win to his already impressive resume. There were two Federated Auto Parts Mini Stock feature wins up for grabs on this night and Josh Morrow took them both behind the wheel of Orry Wirts number 8w. Josh also claimed a heat win along with Don Lehman.
Not such an easy win for Doug Drown this week when Ryan Markham claimed the early lead leaving Drown to battle with Corey Conley for second, Drown inherited that spot when Conley bounced up the race track and all the back to sixth before he recovered. Drown stays on the gas and roars into first, Conley steps up his pace and passes Allan Baker while Dave Hornikel makes his way around J.R Gentry and Chet Alexander on lap six before Al Farris brings out the first caution. Back to green and its Drown, Markham, Jason Flory, and Keith Berner together into the first corner, Markham the slight advantage but slips up in turn two giving Drown and Berner the top spots. Still in the hunt Conley challenges Flory but is quickly turned away. On the eighteenth circuit Drown encounters lapped traffic but two separate yellows ensured open track for the final five laps in which Berner made several attempts to pass Drown to no avail with Markham still close in third. Going into the final corner Markham slips up the track allowing Conley to close in, pull alongside and pass by a nose for third under the checkered flag. Flory ended with a top five followed by Rick Bond up from eleventh.
Wayne County Speedway will be closed next week, Saturday August 23, race fans and competitors should check www.waynecountyspeedway.com for the next event.
