PHENIX CITY, Ala. (August 16) - Two thrilling nights of capacity crowds and dirt track excitement marked the late summer program at East Alabama Motor Speedway. In the ATV competition children from seven years old and up competed on the prepared infield with high jumps and special tricks. Free passes were handed out for the Friday night show so all the local school kids could see what some of their peers were up to on the dirt surface. The Monster truck show ran both nights and thousands of fans were treated to the awesome display of deafening 1500 horsepower Monsters jumping and spinning on the red clay. Saturday night the Late Model division ran their last points race of the year with this year's champion Richie "Rocketman" Stephens and the eternal champion, the legendary Master of Faster, Dana Eiland putting on a great show of speed and racing savvy. The Rocketman set the tempo with a qualifying time of 15.75 to win the Extreme Power Sports $100 award for fast time and started the feature from the pole. Rising star Montana Dudley was second fastest and was on the outside pole when the green dropped on the feature. The Rocketman blasted out to the lead and Eiland wasted no time in moving his # K9 into second place. On the second lap misfortune struck Dudley as he got caught up in a three car collision in turn one. Chaz Haskins and Brandon Pijnenburg went to the pits with severe damage. When the green came back the Rocketman chose to run a line in the middle of the track and Eiland chose to run the apron under him. Another speedster Anthony Meadows had moved into third place from seventh by lap six. Pijnenburg came back on the track with all of his right side sheet metal missing and his nose and hood were also gone. He fired down the front straightaway and had plenty of speed but when he reached turn one the car would not turn and he went for that unpleasant ride off the top of turn one. Smoother than smooth Slick Rick Culpepper was suddenly in the mix sparring with Mike Parkerson over fourth place. Culpepper passed him in turn one then Parkerson came back from the inside and after getting his nose in the lead pushed high in turn two which cut the track off for Culpepper who, rather than tearing up his car, went off the backstretch for a yellow flag penalty. On the restart Rocketman achieved escape velocity and was in orbit running several carlengths ahead of Eiland. Josh Noles came out turn four and hit a slick spot which put him into the outside wall and ended his day. Jimmy Evilsizer, who was seen at a local pawn shop earlier in the week saying this was the only way he could afford to race, broke on lap 16 and rolled into the pits. Parkerson had the pedal to the metal as he went past Larry Eldridge for fourth on lap 17. Matt Woodson's decision to change his luck by going from a red car to a shiny blue GRT was running strong as he passed Scott Prins for seventh. Back in outer space the Rocketman was going where no man has gone before as he pulled away from Dana Eiland, by 10 carlengths, to take the checkers in championship form. Dana Eiland finished second, Anthony Meadows third, Mike Parkerson fourth, and Larry Eldridge rounded out the top five in fifth.
