Chuck Griffith LAKEVILLE, Ohio (August 15) - The pits were bulging with over 100 race cars and the grandstand was at near capacity count as the fans were treated to the ultimate in entertainment in all seven divisions of racing on Friday night at the New Lakeville Speedway. It was the second leg of the Triple Crown for the Pepsi Winged Sprints and twenty one drivers took the green flag in the thirty lap event. Five time winner,Tim Hunter was lined up on the outside of the front row with Willie Keegan on the pole and Hunter blasted to the lead as Chris Andrews was in chase from his third spot with points leader Nick Mulheim and Dean Jacobs going side by side for two laps. The yellow was out on lap eight for jason Dolick stopping in turn three and on the single file restart,Jacobs went to the top of the track and shot to the third running spot.A flat tire on the Kurt Jefferies sprinter created another yellow flag on the following lap and Jacobs found the top of the track to his liking and moved around Andrews into the runner up spot and put all his attention on the leader Hunter. As Hunter was protecting the bottom of the track,Jacobs stayed up high and kept continuous pressure on Hunter but was unable to overtake the leader. In the late laps of the feature, Andrews also found that the top was where it was at and moved in to mount a late charge on Jacobs. Hunter then put some distance between himself and Jacobs and drove to his sixth win of the season in his Berlin Bakery,Blair Sign sponsored ride.Jacobs held on to second with Andrews taking third, Mulheim raced to a fourth place finish and Aaron Middaugh came from eleventh to garnish a top five finish.Middaugh,Aaron Shaffer and Mulheim grabbed the heat wins.
When the Lakeville Late Models came to the starting line,Doug Drown and Mike Lonas had earned the front row with Rocky Owens and Benny Lester in row two.Lonas went to the point right away with Drown on his rear bumper.Very close racing was witnessed lap after lap as the two veterans used the top and the bottom of the racing surface to find thier preferred line.A lap four caution flag slowed the field and on the restart in turn one and two,Drown stuck the nose of his machine to the bottom of Lonas but could not make it stick as Lester and Owens was doing the exact same thing for the third position.A lap nine yellow saved the two leader from getting around lap traffic and when the restart was shown,Lonas had a clear playing field ahead.Jason Flory and Kristin Flory was working hard to move forward and both had to race side by side with J.R.Gentry.On lap nineteen Lonas was getting very heavy pressure fron Drown and as they entered turn three, contact was made and Lonas was spun out and recieved a flat tire was headed to the pits with Drown moved to the tail of the field. With only six laps remaining,Lester had taken over the lead and put his Hall's Auto Sales entry into the winners circle for the second time this year.Owens held on to a second place finish with Jason Flory third,Kristin Flory fourth and Gentry finishing fifth from starting tenth. The three heat races were won by Lester,Drown and Jason Flory.
