Matt Felten CUMBERLAND, Md. (August 15) - D.J. Troutman was dominant for the third-straight race, turning away the competition in the Maryland Clash with the Hagerstown Speedway on Friday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Tony Daniels and Jimmy Sacco celebrated their first wins of the season in the Sunoco Street Stocks and TC Race Cars Hobby Stocks. Dwain Rhodes was declared the winner of the Factory Stock 4-Cylinder feature and Wade Peer got his fifth win in the 6-Cylinders on the last lap.
Troutman was in control of the Limited Late Model race by the fifth lap as he shot by a slowing Jerry Bard on the frontstretch. Bard, who entered the event leading the Clash points for the bonus money, brought out the caution shortly thereafter.
Troutman set the pace and Andy Fries worked past Dylan Yoder on the restart. Troutman had built his lead to over three seconds when the second and final caution came on lap 13.
The only tense moments remaining for Troutman came in the final eight laps while trying to negotiate through lapped traffic. Fries couldn't get much closer, however, and Troutman's lead held to four seconds at the finish of the 30-lap feature.
Fries, who Troutman credited with saving his night by repairing his engine, finished second for the third time in the Clash. Yoder, Matt Sponaugle and Scott Palmer completed the top five.
Daniels finally put together a victory after many close calls in the 16-lap Street Stock feature. He didn't go unchallenged, however, as Randy Zechman kept the race close all the way.
Daniels took the lead by powering to the outside of Zechman on lap five. Zechman slipped back as far as fourth before regaining second on lap eight when Rick Wright slowed.
Two laps after the restart, Zechman pulled even with Daniels on laps 10 and 11. Daniels eventually shook off the scare and went on to win by three car lengths. Zechman, Mike Harvey, Justin Bonnett and John Whitfield completed the top five.
Sacco took over the lead after Steve Fadley and Marcius VanMeter got together on the opening lap. He held off David Puckett through lap five when Puckett's engine started to whither.
Sacco's lead was insurmountable for the rest of the field--he led by three seconds over Mike Siegele on lap six--and the battle turned to the second spot. Siegele eventually gave way to Mike VanMeter for second. Siegele held off Joe Railey for fourth and Gary Procter was fifth.
Rhodes claimed his first 4-Cylinder feature win of the season by being in the right place after the checkered flag fell. The top two cars were disqualified and Rhodes, who would have finished third, was awarded the win.
In the adjusted finishing order, Rick Jenkins was second while Brandon Inglish, Nick Iski, and Tyler Alkire completed the top five.
Peer waited until the final turns and made the right move by switching back to the inside to get ahead of Jay Imes in the 12-lap 6-Cylinder race.
Imes, who had the lead by five car lengths at the halfway point, saw his lead erased by Peer counting down to the finish. Peer tried high and low before settling on the winning move in turns three and four. Imes got second with Ray Shepherd, Matt Stickley and Joe Readd completing the top five.
The Independent Racing Series (IRS) will be at The Rock for the first time ever next Friday, Aug. 22. Hobby Stocks and 4-Cylinders will join the Super Late Models from the tri-state area and from the series. The winner's purse is $5,000 for the IRS feature.
