Bob Appleget CHATSWORTH, Ga. (August 8) - Gary McPherson took the Late Model feature win and closed in on yet another season championship Friday night at North Georgia Speedway. With one race to go in the season point battle McPherson only needs to start next Friday night to clinch the Late Model season point championship at the third mile clay oval.
On his way to his second Late Model win of the season McPherson held off second in points Jake Knowles for the first 29 laps. On the white flag lap Kevin Gibson would take the second spot from Knowles, but it was too little to late for Gibson to do anything with McPherson. Lee Sutton was fourth and J.J Nye finished fifth.
Preston Graves, Brad Coffey, Billy Reeves, Brad Kennedy and Scott Hall rounded out the top 10.
With the Top Tracks event next week this was the final point race for the Limited/Crate Late Models. Doing everything he could to catch Limited/Crate Late Model point leader Phillip Anderson, Rick Hixson scored another win, his eighth of the season. However, with Anderson finishing second for the second week in a row there were but four points to be gained by Hixson and he came up 82 points short of the title. Anderson wins the 2008 Championship Limited/Crate Late Model Track Championship.
At the drop of the green Scott Jackson would take the lead and hold it for three laps when Hixson motored into the lead. Once in the lead he was never headed as he scored his eighth win of the season. On lap 16 of the 20 lap feature Anderson would move past Jackson for second. Jackson would settle for third, John Parris fourth and Jeff Jones fifth.
In Hobby action Jason Mabry led all 15 laps to take the win over Tim Ford. Jeff Kile would finish third with Junior Whitner fourth and Donnie Farmer fifth.
Pony point leader Grady Stokes padded his already insurmountable point lead with a flag-to-flag win over Ralph Langston. Harry Ward crossed the stripe in third, Caleb Howard fourth and Mathew Decker fifth.
Ronnie Sanders wired the Econo Bomber field to take the win. Justin Thomas kept Sanders honest but had to settle for second. Timmy Millwood was third, John Morrison fourth and Ryan West fifth.
Next Friday night will feature the Top Tracks Challenge Series for Crate Late Models. This will be the final point race for Late Models, Hobby, Pony and Econo Bomber.
