Sheila Leamer MANITOWOC, Wisc. (August 8) - With school right around the corner, EWSC helped the kids get ready to go back by giving them back to school items. The night was also in remembrance of Happy Laack. Happy was one of the "founding fathers" of EWSC back in 1961 and was an active member of the club until he passed away.
Due to some lengthy repairs that needed to be done to the backstretch guardrail from an incident that happened during one of the Grand National heat races, the feature races were shortened.
The Late Model feature was in memory of Happy Laack. The race was projected to go 35 laps but was shortened to 30 laps. Rick Scheffler of Waukesha took the lead from the pole and continued to pace the way until lap 9. Franklin's Dan Sorce passed Scheffler for the lead and continued to lead until lap 17. Scheffler fought back and took the lead back on lap 18. The caution flag was waved on lap 19 for the car of Ralph Aschenbrenner of Oneida. Meanwhile, Shawano's Tom Naeyaert had one goal in mind and would not settle for anything less than that goal. Naeyaert passed Scheffler on lap 26. The yellow flag flew on lap 27 for the cars of Russ Scheffler of Waukesha, Franklin's Al Atkinson, Craig Schueffner and Tim Carman, both of Sheboygan getting together. Chasing Naeyaert to the checkers was Scheffler, Marshfield's Chris Oertel, Ron Berna from Green Bay and Oneida's Ralph Aschenbrenner. Naeyaert took home the extra $100 purse money donated by Baleigh Industrial of Manitowoc. The Cher-Make "Hot Dog" Hard Charger was from the Late Model division and Glenbeulah's Howie Weiss was the recipient for passing 7 cars.
Racing continues next Friday, August 15th with Food Pantry Night. All fans are asked to bring a non-perishable food item to be given to the Food Pantry. The 2008 EWSC yearbooks are on sale for $4.00. Get yours and stop in the pits after the races and get your favorite drivers autograph. Check out EWSC's website, www.EWSCracing.net, for updated points and other racing info.
