UFo Media MIDDLEBOURNE, W.V. (August 3) - The Unified Force Race Championship Super Late Model Tour presented by Comcast visited the Tyler County Speedway in Middlebourne, WV on Sunday night for the running of the 21st Annual Earl Hill Memorial Championship. At the end of the 51-lap main event, it was Tim Dohm from Cross Lanes, WV picking up the $4,000 victory.
With a field of 49 cars on hand, six exciting qualifying heat races were lined up by the luck of the draw. From the tail of the nine-car field, Paul Baker charged forward to win Heat 1. Tim Dohm took Heat 2 after starting fourth. Steve Baker captured Heat 3, after starting fourth on the grid. Also starting fourth, UFo Series point leader Jared Miley took Heat 4. Heat 5 went to third starting Alex Ferree over Mike Balzano, as Balzano ran the entire heat with a flat left front tire. Steve Shaver won the final heat after starting second.
In the redraw for the top 12 starting positions, Ferree, the fifth driver to draw, drew the outside pole position. The coveted pole position fell all the way to the eleventh car to draw, as Balzano happily accepted the top position. Ironically, they would get to resume their heat race battle. Two B-Mains set the field, which were won by Steve Wilmoth and Jared Hawkins, and the 26-car feature field was set.
With Balzano and Ferree leading the 21st Annual Earl Hill Memorial Championship to the green flag, Ferree used the outside to take the early lead over Balzano, Bobby Hill, Tim Dohm, and Jared Miley. Ferree was using the high line around the Tyler track that is affectionately known as "The Bullring." His competition fanned out in the lower grooves, trying to find the momentum to advance on the leader.
The first caution appeared with two laps complete, as Keith Barbara got squeezed hard into the turn two wall. A red flag was required as repairs to the guardrail were required. When repairs were completed, the slow pace of the race continued, with multiple caution periods marring the early laps of the race. After a restart on lap 5, racing finally settled in with Ferree leading Balzano, Dohm, Doug Horton, and Butch McGill. With the leaders catching the tail of the field by lap 14, Dohm used a good move in race traffic to sneak into the race lead on lap 15. When a lap 17 caution waved, it would be the final one of the event.
Dohm continued to show the way on the restart, with Ferree, Horton, Shaver, and Balzano in pursuit. Joe Loudin moved down to the extreme inside lane, and picked off Balzano for fifth on lap 19 Loudin moved in to battle Horton for fourth, as Ferree had his hands full with Shaver for second. Loudin took fourth from Horton on lap 23, and Shaver finally cleared Ferree for second at the halfway mark.
Dohm continued to show the way, but Shaver quickly gained ground on the leader. Horton passed Loudin back for fourth on lap 27. With Shaver within car lengths of Dohm, his race came to an end on lap 33 as he exited to the pits. Dohm now had a big lead over Ferree, Horton, Balzano, and Loudin. Horton passed Ferree on lap 36, as Loudin and Balzano continued their war for fourth. The final laps clicked off with seventh starting Dohm taking the win over 11th starting Horton. Ferree was third and regains the point lead by a single point over Jared Miley. After exchanging fourth several times, Balzano nosed 16th starting Loudin for the spot at the line. Jared Hawkins was sixth from 20th, as Butch McGill, Miley, Shawn McGarvey, and Clate Copeman filled the top ten.
