Bob Appleget CLEVELAND, Tenn. (August 2) - Johnny Chastain made one of this rare appearances at Cleveland Speedway pay off as the Murphy, NC driver won the Late Model feature on the third mile clay oval Saturday night.
Starting on the pole with fellow North Carolina driver Gabe Wilson, Chastain took the lead at the drop of the green. Kevin Gibson fresh off a win at North Georgia the night before fell in behind Chastain as they began their 30 lap run to the checkered flag.
While Chastain and Gibson were waging their own war for the lead, behind them the battle for the next three spots was fast and furious. First Lamar Scoggins and Jason Welshan battled for third with Shawn Chastain in fifth. When Scoggins faded on the 22nd lap Welshan moved into third with defending track champion Paul Tims, who started seventh, taking fourth. Tenth place starter Dusty Carver would move in behind Tims for fifth. In the remaining laps the top five would remain the same with Chastain holding off Gibson for the win.
Craig Burrows was sixth, Shawn Chastain seventh, Brad Allen eighth, Ethan Hunter ninth and Wilson tenth. Gibson picked up a $100 bonus for being high point man for Friday and Saturday's Late Model features.
Rick Hixson followed up his Friday night Limited/Crate Late Model win at North Georgia with a win at Cleveland and he too picked up a $300 bonus for the feat and having a crate motor. Hixson would lead all 20 laps of the feature while Brian Pritchard, Chris Beavers, Richard Dixon and Brian Burke were battling for position. At the halfway point Pritchard would move past Beavers for second and the two would run second and third behind Hixson to the checkered flag. Dixon would finish fourth and Burke fifth.
In A-Hobby Tanner Works just kept rolling along right into victory lane. Saturday night was his 13th consecutive victory. Taking the lead on the first lap Works would hold off Chuck Cooper for the first 10 laps and Chris Stewart in the second 10 to take the win. Robbie Greene was third David Brown fourth and Chuck Cooper fifth.
Patrick Harvey scored his 10th B-Hobby win of the season. The Soddy Daisy driver led every lap keeping Chad Collins at bay. Colby Shipley was third, Jimmy Smith fourth and Donald Forgey fifth.
David Goode powered into the lead on the second lap of the Pony feature and never looked back as he went on to take the win. Jimmy Elliott was second across the stripe with Jimmy Brown third, Nick Webb fourth and Sean Truelove fifth
Kenny Kizzar knocked off another Front Runner win as he outran Billy Bailey, Dustin Cansler, Rick Eddington and John Petty.
Next Saturday night Elliott's Used Cars and L&S Motors will present the Inaugural Stacey McCalister Memorial Pony Race. The event will pay $1,200 to win. There will also be racing in all the regular divisions including Late Models.
