D.R. Goodman WILLIAMSBURG, Ohio (August 1) - On a hot summer night at Moler Raceway Park the racing action was as hot as the temperature. Starting in the Sunesis Construction Late Model division it was West Union's Marty Huntley setting fast time at 13.001 around the ¼ mile speed plant. In heat race action it was Milan, Indiana's Tom Sheets winning heat #1 with Larry Pickelheimer Jr passing Huntley on the last lap to win heat #2. The feature was set with Sheets and Pickelheimer on row one but all eyes were on the back of the pack as points leader Barry Doss who dropped out of the heat race starting 13th and last year's track champion John Whitney starting 14th in a borrowed car (Whitney blew his engine in the heat race). At the start of the 25 lapper it was Pickelheimer jumping out front but Tom Sheets good night ending early as he pounded the outside wall on the front stretch ending his good night. On the restart it was Pickelheimer leading with Dave Kirker and Billy Williams in tow. At the halfway point Barry Doss had moved up to third behind Pickelheimer and Williams. A great battle ensued including a two lap shootout in which both Doss and the Williams were able to get beside the leader but to no avail as Larry Pickelheimer Jr claimed his first ever feature event in the late model division. Williams came home second followed by Doss, Mike Myers, and Josh Tidwell.

In the cheapbowlingballs.com modified event it was the new grandpa, Doug Adkins, winning his heat and the 20 lap A-main event for the second week in a row. The real story was the great race behind him as heat #2 winner and points leader Ray Branscum, Jeremie Bretz, Dave McWilliams, and Bruce Gould put on a whale of a show battling back and forth side-by-side throughout the race. At the end it was Adkins followed by Branscum, McWilliams (who started 9th), Jeremie Bretz, and Bruce Gould in the top five spots. Adkins in his 239 Auto group sponsored Loose Gruff Chassis taking win #4 on the season.
MRP was also running a special paying event in the 600 cc mini-sprints. Gary Loney (who won the last time that MRP ran the 600 minis) won his heat. Todd Loney and Keen started on the front row of the 20 lap feature event. Keen got the jump and led the entire race but the show was watching young Sam Ashworth work his way up from fourth position at the end of lap 1 to right behind Keen with a two lap shootout at the end of the race. Keen would have none of it and got a great restart to put away the victory. Ashworth came home second, followed by Herschel Wills, Daryll Mangus, and Gary Loney in 5th spot.
In the Phantom Firework Pure Stock division it was another exciting battle up front as Versailles, Indiana's Shawn McIntosh led from the start but Scott Hess was on the move and once he disposed of early 2nd place runner Ed Reynolds it was a great battle between the two up front. Finally coming for the white flag Hess was able to get all the way around McIntosh and take control of the top spot. Hess went on to win feature event in his RH Towing, Larry's Engine, Christopher Scott Mobile Homes sponsored car. McIntosh held on for 2nd with Chad Minnie having a nice run in 3rd spot followed by Ed Reynolds and Tim Carpenter in fifth. Heat wins went to Reynolds and McIntosh.
Following last week's special event for the Chevette class it would seem that there might be a let down this week but that was not the case as 14 cars took to the green flag with Jeff Watson looking to repeat last week's win in his Crosstown Carryout sponsored machine but the run would be short lived as mechanical problems forced him pitside on lap 6 turning the lead over to Miles Tarvin. Tarvin would not have it easy as Brandon Elam kept getting to the inside of Tarvin but despite a last lap wreck and slowing car in front of the two leaders Tarvin was able to claim yet another feature win in his P&G Farms, Cenpeco, Richey Automotive and Tire, Paul Brath sponsored machine. Elam held on for second followed by Alannah Weis, Kevin Riggs, and Daryl Weiss the top five. Tarvin and Watson each won heat races.
Next week will feature a regular show of Sunesis Construction Late Models,Cheap Bowling balls.com Modifieds ,the Phantom Fireworks Pure Stocks and Chevettes. Also on hand will be the VARC Cars vintage auto racing cars. Come out and enjoy a great evening of racing! .
