Jim Pluhar SANTA MARIA, Calif. (July 30) - Late Model Stocks, D&S Automotive IMCA Modifieds, East vs. West Shootout Super Streets, and Factory Stocks will all congregate at Santa Maria Speedway Saturday night.
Steve Drake, of San Luis Obispo, continues to lead the points in the Late Model Stock division, as he has since the beginning of the season. Second place Devin Crockett, of Arroyo Grande, trails the leader by 24 markers after his feature victory June 28. Buena Park's Billy Griffin is 50 points behind with fourth place Dana Beattie, of Lompoc, another point off the pace, and David Childress, of Bakersfield, trailing Drake by 68.
In the IMCA Modified ranks Danny Lauer, of Santa Maria, and Kenny Kirkpatrick, of Nipomo, continue as the pair to beat for the 2008 championship. Lauer leads Kirkpatrick by 15 with third place Josh Vogt, of Santa Maria, trailing by 31. Santa Maria's Doug Thornton (-37) and Arroyo Grande's Chad Weber (-69) are fourth and fifth.
Bakersfield drivers Robby Sawyer and Darrel Hood are battling it out for the title in the East vs. West Shootout. Sawyer is 29 markers up on Hood with Santa Maria's Tim Randolph running third, 60 points out of first. Nick Sylvester (-119), of Bakersfield, and Toby Randolph (-125), of Santa Maria, fill out the top-five.
Kirk Morgan, the first of four Santa Maria drivers leading the Factory Stock division, had his advantage over Michael Frazier cut to 36 after finishing second to Frazier in the July 19 main event. Glen Sparks and Tim Bennett trail by 60 and 73 respectively, and Arroyo Grande's Kevin Linson is 96 points behind.
Gates for Saturday night's event will open at 3:00 p.m., with racing at 6:00 p.m. Tickets will be priced at $18.00 for adults, $14.00 for seniors (65+), $5.00 for children six to twelve, with children five and under admitted free. Credit cards are not accepted.
