Dave Seay JAMAICA, Va. (July 25) - Stephan Evans of Tyner, NC captured Saturday night's 35 lap Victory Lap Late Model feature at Bill Sawyer's Virginia Motor Speedway, taking the lead from Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA on lap 22 in his #92 Quality Logging Cams Racing Engines powered Chevrolet Rocket. The win was Evans career first late model victory.
Current point leader Walker Arthur of Forest, VA led the first six laps before blowing a motor ending his night. Austin Hubbard of Laurel, DE took over the lead and led the next seven laps before his motor expired in turn 4 handing the lead to Cohick.
Cohick would hold the lead until lap 21 when Evans dove inside the veteran out of turn 2 to take the lead and the victory.
Stevie Long, who brought out the races third caution on lap 8, drove back to the front to take home a third place finish.
Trailing Evans to the checkers were Tom Cohick, Stevie Long, Chris Stacy and Ben Bowie. Bowie picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his fifth place finish.
Bill Sawyer's Virginia Motor Speedway returns back to action Saturday August 2nd to host Capitol Boiler Works "Kid's in Uniform" Night. All children wearing a baseball, soccer, Boy Scout or Girl Scout uniform will be admitted free.
The night's events will feature Round 3 of the Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge presented by BB&T.
The four race series offers a bonus program for multiple wins by a driver. The Victory Lap Late Model $25,000 Challenge will pay a $5,000 bonus to anyone winning two of the four events; it goes to $15,000 if a driver can win three of four events; and finally, if a driver sweeps all four events that driver would pick up a cool $25,000 bonus.
The first two rounds of the series were won by different drivers which means there will be no $25,000 bonus paid out again this year. Current point leader Walker Arthur of Forest, VA picked up the win in round one with Tom Cohick of Gloucester, VA holding off Arthur for the round two win. Both drivers are eligible for the $15,000 bonus, but one of them must sweep the final to rounds of the series. Track rules for the Victory Lap Late Model Division will apply.
