Roby Helm FORT PAYNE, Ala. (July 25) - Lee Sutton of Taylorsville, GA took his first career Super Late Model win on Saturday night in grand fashion at Fort Payne Motor Speedway. Sutton set fast time, and then led all 25 laps in the Ladd's Farm and Equipment #L7 lapping all but the second-place car of Tubby Nunn of Boaz, AL in the Tubby's Pit Stop #54.
"It's been three long years of hard work to finally get this win, and I guess the monkey is finally off my back," Sutton said. "This really feels great, and we'll be back again to Fort Payne Motor Speedway to try it again."
Sutton set fast time with a lap around the 3/8-mile clay oval in 15.280 seconds to earn the pole position for the main event. The only person Sutton didn't beat at Fort Payne Motor Speedway on Saturday night was stuntman Michael Anthony Mooney.
During intermission, Mooney blindfolded himself, shackled himself to the back of Sutton's race car with a coiled up 80 foot chain, and he escaped before Sutton could pull away at speed and tighten the chain.
"That was close, and I just about peed by pants," exclaimed Mooney after he just barely freed himself before the chain tightened up. "This is the first time I've done this stunt blindfolded and never with a race car that powerful. I could feel the vibration and knew it was going to be close."
Jeremy Pruitt of Chattanooga, TN finished third in the Super Late Model feature race driving the Finish Line Concrete Pumping #5, Ryan Law of Piedmont, AL took the fourth spot, and Bobby Pruitt of Gadsden, AL rounded out the top five in the Pruitt Towing #B6.
Jimmy Kay of Taylorsville, GA won the 20-lap NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Late Model feature race in the Temple's Building Warrior. Kenny Brown of Fyffe, AL finished second in the Kenny Brown Construction ORC, and Lucas Burns of Attalla, AL took the third spot in the Burns Racing Barry Wright.
Matthew Coffman of Stevenson, AL won the 12-lap A-Hobby feature race in the Market Street Performance #38, and Jeff Phillips of Scottsboro, AL won the 12-lap Pony Stock feature race in the Phillips Racing #55.
