Chub Frank Racing BEAR LAKE, Penn. (July 22) - Chub Frank will always remember his 2008 World of Outlaws Late Model Series 'Wild West Tour' - for better or for worse.
"It was the most eventful time I've ever had on the road," Chub said of the extended western trip that included eight events in six states and one Canadian province from July 9-21. "It started with our trailer getting all beat up by hail (the morning of July 10 during a storm-abbreviated promotional appearance at the Lester Buildings corporate headquarters in Lester Prairie, Minn.), and then we spent the rest of the time switching between our new car and old car, trying whatever we could to get going."
The popular driver from Bear Lake, Pa., was one of the steadiest Outlaws on the 'Wild West Tour,' racking up two top-five and seven top-10 finishes in the eight A-Mains that were completed (the July 10 date at North Central Speedway in Brainerd, Minn., was rained out. But he failed to crack Victory Lane - a fact that certainly gnawed at the competitive racer.
"It was an O.K. trip from the racing end of it," said Chub. "But we needed to be a little better. I expected to do a little better than I did."
Chub's best night came on July 20 at the blazing-fast Belleville (Kan.) High Banks, where he finished second in the 35-lap A-Main. He closed in on eventual winner Kelly Boen in the race's final moments but ran out of time.
Another satisfying evening for Chub came on July 16 at Gillette (Wyo.) Thunder Speedway. He finished third in the track's inaugural 'Cowboy 50' after climbing as high as second from the eighth starting spot in his Lester Buildings, Corry Rubber, All Star Performance, Corry Laser, Slavic Corporation, Farr MotorSports, Lake Shore Paving, Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*.
Chub also scored solid, if not spectacular, top-10 finishes in 50-lap events on July 9 at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn. (ninth place); July 12 at Estevan (Saskatchewan) Motor Speedway (ninth after starting 16th); July 13 at Williston Basin Speedway in Williston, N.D. (sixth); July 18 at Brown County Speedway in Aberdeen, S.D. (seventh after turning the second-fastest lap in time trials); and July 21 at Boone County Raceway in Albion, Neb. (10th after overtaking Josh Richards in the final laps). His only finish outside the top 10 came on July 11 at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., where he placed 12th.
After entering the 'Wild West Tour' ranked fifth in the in the WoO LMS points standings, Chub ended the swing sitting in the third spot. He trails leader Darrell Lanigan by 130 points after 26 WoO LMS events.
"We moved up in the points, so from that standpoint the trip was a success," said Chub. "Lanigan definitely has it going on right now and is going to be hard to catch, but we have ourselves in good position now."
There's little rest from the WoO LMS grind for Chub. He'll be right back in action with the tour this weekend, competing in the Allte l Ohio Speedweek that has dates on Thursday (July 24) at Muskingum County Speedway in Zanesville, Ohio; Friday (July 25) at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio; Saturday (July 26) at Sharon Speedway in Hartford, Ohio; and Sunday (July 27) at Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa.
Chub will end his busy month with the Outlaws on Tues., July 29, with the rescheduled $40,000-to-win Firecracker 100 at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa.
Sunday night's event at Eriez Speedway will put Chub in the spotlight. Not only is the one-third-mile oval one of the tracks where Chub grew up racing, it's also the site of a special promotion administered by his primary sponsor Lester Buildings. Fans can stop by the Lester Buildings booth at the track to meet Chub and enter a contest that will award three grand prizes (BP gas cards worth $500, $250 and $100); three second prizes (1/24th-scale diecasts of Chub's dirt Late Model); and 10 third prizes (Chub Frank Racing hats).
