Jack Walbring QUINCY, Ill. (July 13) - Mark Burgtorf, David Wietholder twice and James Leffew all took feature event wins during Tom Boland Ford/Hannibal Night at the Races on Sunday, July 13 at Quincy Raceways.
Kevin Tomlinson took the early lead at the drop of the green flag in the Budweiser J&J Steel Late Model main event with Matt Bailey hounding his every move. Bailey pulled past Tomlinson on the sixth circuit to take the lead but it was to be short lived as tenth place started Mark Burgtorf was blasting his way through the field on his patented high groove. Burgtorf took over the top spot on the ninth lap and pulled out to a decided advantage with Bailey in tow. Burgtorf worked his lead out to over four seconds at the checkered flag to pick up his third points paying feature win of the season. Matt Bailey settled for the second spot followed by Jason Frankel in third, Lonnie Bailey in fourth and Justin Reed in fifth. Matt Bailey and Joey Gower were the heat race winners with Jason Frankel claiming the win in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash. Jason Frankel now holds a nine point margin over Justin Reed.
Jared Schlipman led the first twelve laps of the Miller Lite Modified main event but David Wietholder had other ideas about who was going to lead the pack to the checkered flag. Wietholder charged through the field from his eighth starting spot and pressured Schlipman until making the pass for the lead on the thirteenth lap. Wietholder then had to hold off a huge charge from Joe Hooper who was using the very top line to close to within striking distance on the final couple of laps. Hooper had to settle for the second spot followed by Schlipman in third, Shawn Deering in fourth and Justin Reed in fifth. Deering and Rob Carter were the heat race winners with Tony Dunker scoring the win in the Advance Trading Trophy Dash. Michael Long decided to race elsewhere Sunday night and it cost him to points lead but that points battle now is a four way event with Rookie Steven DeLonjay in the lead with 336 to Tony Dunker in second with 331, Long in third with 328 and David Wietholder in fourth with 325.
David Wietholder doubled up on his feature event wins by capturing a wild and wooly Triple R Performance Engines Sunoco IMCA Stock Car main event. Wietholder took the lead on the third circuit and held off multiple pass attempts by Jeff Mueller to take the feature event win by less than a second. Mueller held on for second with Steve Steinkuhler in third, Doug Huls in fourth and Abe Huls in fifth. Wietholder and Rusty Tobias were the heat race winners. John Oliver Jr's sixteenth place finish dropped him into the second spot in the points chase behind Chris Wibbell by eight markers. James Leffew picked up his third feature event win of the points season in the Tim's Machine Shop Hobby Stocks by holding off Steven Watkins Jr. the entire twenty laps. Watkins settled for second followed by Aaron Brocksieck in third, Wes Mayfield in fourth and Steve Carlin in fifth. Leffew and Mayfield were the heat race winners. Aaron Brocksieck now had an eleven point lead over Steve Carlin in his quest for his first Track Points Championship.
