Matt Felton CUMBERLAND, Md. (July 12) - Matt Sponaugle picked up his second win of the season by leading the last 13 laps of the Limited Late Model feature on Saturday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.
Three others made trips to victory lane for the first time this season. Mike Harvey prevailed in the Sunoco Street Stock race. Steve Fadley won the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock event and Nathan Carpenter won the Factory Stock 4-Cylinder race. Wade Peer was able to repeat by taking the Factory Stock 6-Cylinder race for the third time.
Sponaugle, who remains in the driver's seat for his second championship, took the lead from Cory Houck in turn two. He cruised through the latter portion of the race until a caution reset the field for the final two laps. He still finished with eight car lengths to spare over Matt Cosner.
Cosner's runner-up finish was his best on the season. He fell to fourth early as Sponaugle and Jamey Swank chased Houck. When Swank and Houck later were engaged in a hard-fought battle for second in turn two, Cosner took advantage to get second.
Houck ended up third after starting from the pole and leading the opening laps. He gave up the lead to Sponaugle in turn two on lap seven. When Swank closed in on lap 13, the two traded second until a slip-up in turn two on lap 15 dropped Houck to third. Swank headed for the pits.
Mikey Hay and Matt Emerick completed the top five.
The annual Allegany County Fair races will be held on Sunday, July 27 starting at 7 p.m. Rides open at 2 p.m. Two special events will be part of the program. The rescheduled second race of The Rock-Hagerstown Clash will offer up $1,000 to win for the Limited Late Models. The Hobby Stocks will be competing for $500 to win the second Randy Simpson Memorial.
