Delph Communications BATESVILLE, Ark. (July 9) - Billy Moyer and his #21 Dirt Late Model team trekked to the Land of Lincoln over the 4th of July holiday weekend for a pair of UMP Summernationals shows. The Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois kicked things off on Friday night, July 4 with a $10,000 to win event. Billy set a new track record in qualifying at the St. Louis area venue and later won his heat race, despite breaking an axle on the last lap. After swapping rear-ends prior to the A-Main, Billy rocketed from his fifth starting position to take the lead from Wes Steidinger on lap twenty-two. The driver known as "Mr. Smooth" went on to lead the remaining laps to record his thirteenth triumph of '08 over Dennis Erb, Wes Steidinger, Wendell Wallace, and Darren Miller.
The UMP Summernationals tour then took the Billy Moyer Racing team north to the Fairbury American Legion Speedway in Fairbury, Illinois on Saturday evening, July 5, as another $10,000 top prize was up for grabs. Billy was fourth quickest in his group during qualifying and later ran fourth in his heat race. Following a victory in the B-Main, Billy rolled off from the outside of the eighth row for the main event. During the course of the A-Main at FALS, the Batesville, Arkansas native was able to pick up ten positions en route to a sixth place performance behind winner Jimmy Mars, Brian Shirley, Darren Miller, Ryan Dauber, and Steve Sheppard, Jr.
"The fans came out to see a good race at Granite City and they got one I believe," quoted Moyer following the win last Friday night. "Our car worked really well all night and I was proud of the guys for working so hard after we broke on the last lap of the heat race. They got the car back together correctly and we were able to get the win. I also can't say enough about all of the people at Victory Circle and everyone involved with our motor program. Everything is clicking pretty good right now!"
The BMR team will be back in action this upcoming weekend in a pair of Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series events in Alabama and Mississippi. A $7,000 to win show will be held this Friday night, July 11 at the North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, Alabama. The action will then turn to the Columbus Speedway in Columbus, Mississippi on Saturday evening for a $10,000 to win race. The cameras of the SPEED Channel will be on hand at the "Baddest Bullring in the South" on Saturday to tape all of the slicing and dicing for broadcast later in the year.
