Victory Lane Communications LOXLEY, Ala. (July 5) - Fireworks lit up the night on and off the track this past Saturday at Deep South Speedway during the annual Independence Day Weekend Extravaganza just north of Gulf Shores. The holiday crowd packed the terraced hillside on a night which saw Mother Nature add some electricity to the evening with fierce thunderstorms nearby and lightning flashing in the background of the electric racing action. Shep Lucas of McKenzie, Alabama donned his Spiderman themed racing suit and played the part of the super hero by roaring to the checkered flag in the Super Late Model main event. Lucas transformed the electricity in the air into the needed horsepower to storm to the victory. The fans were also rewarded with feature racing in seven other divisions in which Ryan Little of Satsuma, Alabama piloted his Little Auto Sales to a second-straight win in GM Performance Late Model action and giving TrakStar Racecars a clean sweep of Deep South Speedways late model clashes.
Shep Lucas was determined to win the main event in tribute and memory of the loss of long-time racing supporter and team-owner, Mr. Doug Webster, who passed away several weeks ago. With the late-Webster as a mentor and backer, Lucas has amassed an incredible winning record thus far in 2008, taking 11 wins in just 17 combined starts in both Super and Crate-engine Late Model features. Lucas took his Signature Construction backed TrakStar number 57 to the front of the field with a late-race winning pass of Frank Wilson as the pair battled for the lead at high speed on the high-banked oval north of I-10. Lucas was able to out duel Wilson as they raced side by side for a handful of laps until Lucas closed the deal and took the checkers. Wilson's strong second-place run came in a brand new Goliath Chassis which he had just returned home with from Mooresville, North Carolina. Following Lucas and Wilson to the stripe was Randy Little, James Ussery and Marlon Wild as the top-five finishers in the division featuring 800 horse powered racing excitement.
