MONETT, Mo. (June 29) - After heavy rains Friday night and Saturday, the skies cleared and gave way for a beautiful night of racing at the Monett Speedway Sunday night. 97 teams checked in, all trying to prove that they are the best in their field.
In the Late Model division heat race wins went to Dustin Mooneyham, Justin Wells, and Chance Hines. Mooneyham and rookie driver Hines set on the pole for the 25 lap main event. Hines took the early lead, using the bottom groove, with Mooneyham not giving up on the top side. Darrin Barton, Justin Wells, Shane Essary, and Brad Looney were mixing it up for the 3rd spot. Caution waved on lap 4, for the 28 machine of Leroy Johnson sitting in turn 4. On the restart Hines continued to hold the lead, as Barton started to fade. Looney took over the 4th position, as the caution waved again on lap 9. As the green waved again, Wells used the high groove to take the 2nd spot going into turn 2, with his sights on the leader. Hines continued to hold his line on the bottom holding off Wells for the next 5 laps. Wells took over the top spot on lap 15, and stretched out his lead, only to have it taken away, with 8 laps remaining, as Ron Johnson was slow on the front stretch. Wells continued to pull away from the field, as Hines had his hands full with Looney for the 2nd spot. Looney made the pass on lap 20, only to have Hines take it back the next lap. Wells came home the winner, making it his 1st of the season at the Monett Speedway. Hines 2nd, Looney 3rd.
In Modified action, Terry Beckham, Jackie Dalton, Rex Merritt, and Johnny Bone all took home heat race honors. Feature action saw Bone take the lead on lap 4, and never look back. Mitch Keeter 2nd, Beckham 3rd, Dalton 4th, and Merritt 5th.
The Factory Stock action, saw George Meyer take the win over top runner Jody Tillman, Kelley Bremer 3rd.
Danny Boyd took home the bomber class, followed by Shawn Strong, and Jerry Lankton.
Pat Schudy continued his winning ways in the Pro-4's, and Dustin Hooten in the Rookie division.
Next week will be weekly racing at the Monett Speedway. Gates open at 5:00 races start at 7:30.
