Greg Parent NEW RICHMOND, Wisc. (June 21) - Outstanding weather was in store for racers and fans at the Cedar Lake Speedway for the second Double Features & Kids Night program on Saturday June 21. All five NASCAR divisions were set for action with a field of 106 cars signed into the pits. Ashley Anderson in the late models and Dave Cain in the modifieds were able to sweep to victories in both the preliminary and main feature events tonight. Other main event wins went to Larry Boumeester in the super stocks, Shawn Phillips with his fifth win of the season in the midwest modifieds, and Shawn Kammerud in the street stock division. Other preliminary feature winners included Devin Neske in the street stocks, Jason Vandekamp and Dane Durbin in the midwest mods, Mike Weber in the super stocks, and Craig Brightbill in the second modified prelim.
During Double Feature Night programs, each class of cars races a preliminary qualifying feature and a main event for the evening. Depending on car count, some divisions require two prelim features. The midwest modified division also needed a B Main. The first feature lines up by the draw method. Finishing and passing points are calculated and determine the lineup for the main event later on in the evening.
The popular NASCAR late model division produced a 23 car starting field for their 20 lap qualifying feature event. Pole sitter Pat Doar wasted no time racing into the lead at the drop of the green while fifth starter Ashley Anderson soon moved into the runnerup position. The first of two cautions waved after nine laps for a two car incident in turn one that sent Jay Poidinger's car nose first into the large tires that protect drivers from the beginning of the concrete wall at the pit entry area. Poidinger, making his first appearance of the season driving for Brent Laursen, sustained enough front end damage in the crash and was done for the evening. When the race resumed, Ashley Anderson moved to the inside of Doar entering turn one and blasted by for the lead. Four laps later the pace was slowed when Chuckie DeSmith encountered some mechanical problems and slowed while entering turn 3. Anderson continued to lead Doar on the restart, as the two leaders put some distance between themselves and the battle for third place. Seven quick laps later Anderson rode home with the win while Doar settled for second. The third through sixth positions changed hands on the final turn coming down for the checkers with Jeff Keeney turning in a fine run for third in front of Kelly Anderson, Bryan Wennen and Rick Egersdorf. Completing the top ten were Toby Patchen, 20th starter Brent Larson, Mike Nutzmann and Mike Hesselink.
Two preliminary feature races were needed for the strong 27 car field on hand in the NASCAR modified division. The first 12 lap qualifier saw Jason Miller lead the first eight laps until the lone caution flew. Dave Cain had steadily been working his way forward from his seventh starting spot, and when the race went green again he was able to make the winning move on Miller. Pat Doar came from ninth to finish third. Tenth starter Dave Lear was fourth while Kevin Viebrock rounded out the top five. In the second modified qualifier, Scott Duvall led the opening lap before current track point leader Craig Brightbill blew by for the lead and eventual win. The race was slowed three times under caution. Following Brightbill was Shaun Kelley, Rick Kobs, Dave Siercks and 12th starter Chris Magistad.
In NASCAR super stock qualifier action, 17 cars lined up for their 15 lap race. Greg Nippoldt led the opening lap from his pole starting spot. Mike Weber moved by Nippoldt on lap 2 and went on to post a solid performance for the win. Only one caution slowed the fast pace at the midway point. Justin Stahl raced to his season best finish of second with Dale Gangl moving up four spots to finish third. Rich Bishop and Nippoldt completed the top five. 2007 CLS track champion Larry Boumeester advanced the most positions in his run from 13th to 6th.
The NASCAR midwest modifieds also required two prelim feature races for their 32 car field. The first 12 lap qualifier had some trouble getting going with a yellow and then a red flag before one lap was ever completed. On the second start attempt, Kenny Jordan Jr rolled his midwest mod in turn 4 while collecting three other cars in the wreck. Jordan ended upright but was done for the night. When the race finally got going, Mark Trog took the early lead and held the top position for the first eight laps before rookie midwest mod driver Jason Vandekamp powered past for the win. Sam Nelson recovered from an opening lap spin to apparently finish second, but he was docked two positions for jumping the lap 6 restart so Trog was credited with second and another rookie Jeremy Houle placed third. Behind Nelson was Vince Corbin who also recovered from the accident on the opening lap to place fifth. A nonstop run in the second midwest mod qualifier saw Dane Durbin bolt into the lead at the drop of the green and never look back enroute to victory. Paul Fontecchio crossed the finish line in second, but he was DQed following the race for failing to go to the tech area. Completing the top five then were Dave Siercks, Bryan Siercks, Shawn Phillips and Kyle Steffen. The midwest mods also needed a B Main to fill out the starting lineup for their main event with Matt Durbin, duplicating his son's earlier effort, leading all the way for the win over Alex Gerlach.
The first main event of the evening saw a slim field of NASCAR street stocks race 12 laps nonstop. Shawn Kammerud led all the way for his second win of the season topping prelim feature winner Devin Neske. Jeff Heintz, Jared Gross and Mike Raboin rounded out the top five finishers, as these same five drivers also occupied the top five spots in the first feature with only seven cars on hand tonight.
During intermission, several activities were held for the kids in attendance including the popular bus rides around the track. Then it was time for the NASCAR midwest modified main event lining up with a full 24 car starting grid for 15 racing laps. Jason Vandekamp drove into the early lead from his pole starting spot followed by Dane Durbin. Just two laps into the race, Durbin stopped in turn one with a broken gear and was done. After another caution for a spin on the restart, Vandekamp continued to lead with Shawn Phillips now looking for a way past. Phillips motored by Vandekamp on lap six and then endured a couple of cautions for spins with seven laps in the books. Phillips held strong up front during the final eight green flag laps for his fifth win of the season. Vandekamp won the battle of the rookies topping ninth starter Jeremy Houle for the runnerup spot. Sam Nelson came from 13th to finish fourth with 10th starter Kyle Steffen running a solid race to place fifth in front of Bryan Siercks. A couple of the B Main cars made their way into the top ten with great runs, as Alex Gerlach came from 22nd to 7th and Matt Durbin from 21st to 9th with Clark Perry in between the two. Mark Trog completed the top ten.
Fans certainly took notice of the front row lined up for the NASCAR super stock 20 lap main event with a couple of former track champions Mike Weber and Larry Boumeester pacing the field. Boumeester took the lead and the high line with Weber falling into second. The race was quickly under caution just one lap in when Tim Borgeson spun in turn four and collected the cars of Greg Nippoldt, Ryan Wiome and Mike Bruggeman. Borgeson rode the hook to the pits while the other cars were able to restart. One lap later the race was under caution again for a spin in turn four. Boumeester continued to lead Weber. On lap five, Jim Gullikson and Mike Bruggeman made contact on the backstretch bringing out the third yellow of the race. Both cars were done. Dale Gangl was running in third at this time with 10th starter Dan Carlson working the low line up to fourth. The race then went 15 laps nonstop to the finish. Gangl, also a former track champion, moved past Weber for second on lap 9 and soon began applying some pressure on the leader. Boumeester did not make a mistake and was able to hold off Gangl for his second win of the season. Weber held off Carlson for third with Rich Bishop running up high for a fifth place finish. Rounding out the top ten were Mike Loomis, Ryan Wiome, Justin Dodge, Greg Nippoldt and Tony Gates.
Four time and defending track champion Dave Cain was on the pole for the NASCAR modified main event with 26 cars slated for 20 laps. It was however current track point leader Craig Brightbill coming for his fourth starting spot to take the early lead over Cain. The "Wild Child" set a blistering pace up front before the race was under its first caution for a spin in turn two three laps in. Two laps later 8th starter Jason Miller moved to third but his car slowed two laps after that bringing out the second caution. Miller retired to the pits with Pat Doar now in third. Another spin with nine laps in kept the field bunched up, as Brightbill was blasting the cushion up high ahead of Cain. Lap 13 proved to be unlucky for the leader, as Brightbill's car slowed on the frontstretch and came to a stop in turn one with a motor failure. Dave Cain became the new leader on the restart and led the final eight circuits enroute to his second main event win of 2008. Pat Doar finished second in front of Rick Kobs, who was driving the Mueller #87 car for the first time at CLS. Jason Gross and Dave Lear completed the top five. Rounding out the top ten finishers were Shaun Kelley, Chris Magistad, Jeremy Gross, 23rd starter Scott Duvall, and Terry Hanson.
With track announcer Chris Stepan calling out his famous words, the 22 car field for the NASCAR late model main event roared to life for 25 laps of ground-pounding action. Ashley Anderson narrowly led the opening lap over Jeff Keeney and then proceeded to open up a good lead from his pole starting spot. The first of three yellows slowed the pace with four laps in when Bryan Wennen stalled in turn four. Anderson now had company up front with Brent Larson glued to his bumper on the restart. The two leaders began to put a little bit of distance on third place runner Pat Doar until the second yellow waved with 13 laps scored. Again Anderson and Larson worked the high line on the restart. The final caution flew 16 laps into the race for a spin in turn four. Anderson held off Larson over the final nine laps to record a clean sweep of feature racing action at CLS tonight. Doar rode home in third ahead of Mike Nutzmann and Rick Egersdorf. Rounding out the top ten were Kelly Anderson, Eric Breeschoten, Randy Gullixson, 20th starter Barry Underdahl and Toby Patchen.
NASCAR racing action continues next Saturday night June 28 with the always popular Firecracker Special featuring a huge fireworks display. The NASCAR late models, modifieds, super stocks and midwest mods will be in action with the street stock division getting the night off. Then the following night on Sunday June 29, the World of Outlaw 410 sprint cars conquer the high-banked 3/8 mile oval for their annual appearance at the Cedar Lake Speedway. Also on the program that night will be the NASCAR midwest modified division. The weekend of June 28 & 29 will be one you do not want to miss with plenty of free camping available at the track for two great nights of dirt track racing!
