T.J. Layne COAL GROVE, Ohio (June 20) - It was another great night of racing at Rocky Top on June 20th. The sixth race of the season got underway with a great field of cars in the pits. Tomahawk Race Car Modifieds had the highest car count of the night at 23.
In the 30 lap Late Model A-Main, Greggie Oliver and Jackie Boggs battled side by side for the lead at the start. The two battled side by side, nobody giving an inch, until the caution flew on lap five. On the restart, Jackie Boggs led with Oliver in second as the best battle was for the third, fourth, and fifth positions between Rod Conley, Randy Boggs, and Harold Redman Jr. Redman was working the high side to perfection as he battled Conley and Boggs.
Meanwhile, in the battle for the lead, Oliver had now began to close up some on Boggs with seven laps remaining. Boggs was running the middle groove while Oliver ran the low line. Oliver closed it down to one car length, but lost several car lengths in the final few laps as Jackie Boggs went on to claim his third win of the season at RTR! Oliver finished second with Rod Conley third, Randy Boggs fourth, and Harold Redman Jr. fifth. Oliver and Boggs won Engines Inc. heat races.
After making an incredible three wide pass to win the Tri-America Contractors Dash, Joey Back started on pole for the Tomahawk Race Car Modified A-Main and led the field down to a wild lap one which saw Dale Lyons ride the turn one and two guardrail out of the track! Lyons was ok. When the action resumed, Back continued to lead while Jason Perry moved into the second position. Perry stayed close to Back the entire race but could not make the pass as Joey Back went on to claim his first career RTR feature win! Perry finished second with Randy Boggs third, Greg Thompson fourth, and C. J. Ferguson fifth. Randy Boggs and Dave Kelley won Engines Inc. heat races.
Wayne Hughes took the lead at the start of the Bomber A-Main while John Rayburn moved into the second position. On lap eight, Rayburn got up beside Hughes as they battled side by side for the lead! The two made a little contact off of turn two the following lap which resulted in a flat tire for Rayburn. When the race resumed, Perry Dearing moved into the second position and battled side by side for the lead with Hughes in the races late stages. Hughes was able to hold him off though as he came to the checkers to claim his fifth win of the season! Dearing finished second with Brian Sammons third, Phil Rice fourth, and Rick Butler fifth. Dearing and Hughes won Engines Inc. heat races.
In the Mod Lite A-Main, Tony Tatdenhorst and Tony Sites battled side by side for the lead at the start. The two made contact off of turn two on lap two which resulted in Sites spinning and going to the tail. When the race resumed, Tatdenhorst led with Jerry Cushing in second. Meanwhile, Tony Sites was a man on a mission as in a few laps he already worked his way up six positions to come to third!
The race then took a dramatic turn as race leader Tatdenhorst spun in turns three and four and collected Chris Stone! Stone retired from the race while Tatdenhorst had to go to the tail. With lady luck on his side, Sites would inherit the lead. On the restart, Sites led the remaining few laps to go across the line and claim his second win in a row! Jerry Cushing finished second with Kevin Rittenhouse third, Harold Kuhn fourth, and Tony Tatdenhorst charging back up to finish fifth. Tatdenhorst and Sites won Engines Inc. heat races.
