WILLIAMSBURG, Ohio (June 20) - It was Armed Forces night at Moler Raceway Park with the running of the 1st Annual, Matt Maupin Freedom Fighters 40 for Late Models and the Zack Gullet Memorial 20 for UMP Modifieds. The night started out with 27 getting their 1 lap of Qualifications in with Josh McGuire driving the Stephens Motorsports #34 entry taking top honors with a 12.80 lap.

Before the racing began all in attendance took part in a ceremony to honor our Armed Forces complete with the Marine Corps Color Guard, performing of Taps, and visits by representatives of the Yellow Ribbon Support Center and the Zack Gullet families. Matt Maupin of Clermont County and Zack Gullet of Highland County are two local young men who lost their lives while serving our country. There was also a visit and inspiring words from US Congresswoman Jean Schmidt who also threw the green flag in the feature event..

In the Sunesis Construction Late Model division, Heat races were won by Josh McGuire, Barry Doss, Cody Mahoney, and Mike Jewell. Those four cars made up the fast car dash with Barry Doss taking the win and setting himself up as the favorite to win the Matt Maupin Freedom Fighters 40 race. From the start it was Josh McGuire jumping out front and leading the entire 40 laps and taking home the $2000 payday in his CJ Rayburn chassis machine. While McGuire led every lap it was by no means a runaway as Barry Doss was close behind in 2nd followed by Billy Williams, Josh Williams, and John Whitney. After a lap 1 caution the race ran the final 39 laps uninterrupted with great racing action throughout the field and most starting cars finishing the event.

In the Zack Gullet Memorial 20 Event for UMP Modifieds it looked like West Portsmouth's Doug Adkins was going to get the monkey off his back and take home his second feature win of the season but to no avail as Dave McWilliams got underneath and passed the Buzzard a lap and a half from the finish. McWilliams had battled the entire race with Walton, Kentucky's Ray Branscum before finally taking over the 2nd position before being able to get by Adkins for the win. Following McWilliams and Adkins was Branscum in third position followed by Shaun Scott and Jim Hilligas Jr. finishing fifth. In heat race action, Ray Branscum and Doug Adkins won the first two heats while Weasel Rhodes came across the line first in the 3rd heat but failed to report to the scales turning the win over to McWilliams. Spencer Watson won the B-Main event.

In the Chevette class it was Miles Tarvin going for his 4th win in a row. With Kevin Riggs on the pole and Tarvin on the outside it looked like Tarvin had a good shot a pulling off the win. Not only did Riggs get a good start and take the lead but Tarvin fell way back in the field (to 6th place at one point ) before working his way back up front. By the time Tarvin reached the front of the field Brandon Elam was leading the pack. Despite numerous attempts and a lap 11 restart Elam looked like he was going to hold off Tarvin but the two guys battled side-by-side the final lap with Tarvin inching ahead at the line to take the win. Elam came home second followed by Riggs, Doug Yust, and Chris Vance (who started in 14th position).

In the Phantom Fireworks Pure Stock division MRP finally got a repeat winner as Derrick Davis led flag-flag to take the win. Ed Reynolds came home second followed by Kevin Hess, Tim Carpenter, and Mike Keller. Davis in his Mugavin Auto Body Sponsored machine was also the winner in the heat race event.

Moler Raceway Park will be back in action June 27th with Scout Night. All scouts in uniform will be admitted free of charge. On the card will be the Sunesis Construction Late Models, UMP Modifieds, Phantom Fireworks Pure Stocks, Chevettes and 600cc Wing Mini-Sprints, plus a bike race for kids 13 and under.
