Mike Leone MERCER, Penn. (June 10) - Mercer Raceway Park will resume action this Saturday night, June 14 with another five-division racing program of Luxaire Heating & Cooling Sprint Cars, Tire Express Modifieds, McElwain Motors FASTRAK Late Models, Big Daddy's Speed Center Mod Lites, and the M&D Paving Mini Stocks with racing beginning at 7 p.m. It's Yellow Book USA Corp. Night.
Saturday will be a huge night as three promotions will come together for the fans. The first is another $10 Family Night presented by Auto Service Express and Armstrong Cable. The promotion will admit mom, dad, and as many kids 15 and under for just $10!
The second promotion is the rescheduled Free Crawford County Night presented by the Oncology Wellness Institute of Meadville Medical Center and Armstrong, which was originally scheduled for May 17. All residents of Crawford County will be admitted free into the grandstands by showing a valid ID as well as all accompanying children 15 and under.
The third promotion, "Thunder at the Park" Bike Night presented by Renegade Classics Outlet Store in Mercer, will admit bikers and their riders for just $5 each! All bikers must go through the main gate, which is the drive-in gate located off of the pit drive.
"We sure would like to get a nice night for one of our promotions," expressed 10th year owner Vicki Emig. "We have fought the weather to some extent for all of our 11 scheduled race events thus far. We love our $10 family nights as it brings out so many families that otherwise may not have attended. There are a lot of race fans in Crawford County and a lot of new people that are Crawford County Night appeals too. And our new marketing partner Renegade Classics is behind out bike night, which we have never tried before."
Rod George missed competition last Saturday due to the wedding for his son, which propelled Arnie Kent into the point lead for the Luxaire Heating & Cooling Sprint Cars. Kent of New Castle, Pa. recorded his best finish of the season in runner-up finishing behind three-time winner Brian Ellenberger. Kent, who is looking for his first win of the season and his first championship of any kind, leads May 10 winner Scott Bonnell by eight points.
Fresh off his first win of the season last Saturday night, Lonny Riggs jumped from fourth in points into the point lead for the Tire Express Modifieds. The Volant, Pa. driver has won races in the Stock Cars, Sportsman Modifieds, Big-Block Modifieds, and the current 358 Modified class, but has never won a track championship. Riggs holds a six-point lead over 2005 champion and recent BRP Big-Block Modified Tour winner Gary Smoker.
After a win in the Memorial Day FASTRAK Northeast Touring event, a third place finish last Saturday combined with Brian Booher's misfortunate, Frank Guidace has assumed the point lead in the McElwain Motors FASTRAK Late Models. Guidace, of Mercer, leads Booher by just six points. Bobby Powell, who won his first race of the season last Saturday, is within 14 points in fourth position, but is near the top in the FASTRAK National Weekly Series- which will pay its champion $10,000.
Todd Canter continues his consistency to hold onto the lead in the Big Daddy's Speed Center Mod Lites. The Warren, Ohio driver has finished in the top six in all five events this season and has a 20-point advantage on defending champion Rod Jones, who has won two of the last three events. John Shannon captured his first career win in last Saturday's M&D Paving Mini Stock feature. With the victory, Harrisville, Pa. driver ascended from sixth in points to second and trails Dan McEwen by 12 points. McEwen, of Mercer, is looking for his first career win.
Pit gates open at 3:30 p.m. and grandstand gates open at 4:30. Warm ups begin at 6:15 and racing begins at 7. For all others, adult admission is $11, students 6-15 are $5, and kids five and under are free. Pit passes are $25.
