Greg Parent NEW RICHMOND, Wisc. (June 7) - With storm clouds gathering to the west, the racing program at the Cedar Lake Speedway got underway quickly in an attempt to beat the weather on Saturday night May 31. A solid field of 110 cars were on hand to compete in the five NASCAR weekly racing divisions. As the skies darkened and weather warnings were issued for the area, heat racing action was moving along at a fevered pace. With all but one heat race in the books and storm sirens sounding, rain began falling forcing officials to postpone the remainder of the program until June 7. Most cars returned the following Saturday night to complete their program with one late model heat race and all five feature races in addition to the regular program scheduled for that night. One week later, feature race winners from the May 31 makeups included Corey Rosen in the street stocks, Shawn Phillips in the midwest modifieds, Dan Carlson in the super stocks, Jason Miller in the modifieds, and Ashley Anderson in the late models.
Heat race winners on May 31 included Jeff Heintz and Chanda Fjorden-Nord in the street stocks. Bob Smith, Jason Vandekamp and Shawn Phillips topped the midwest mod heats. Lyle Archambeau raced ahead of the field in the first super stock heat while Brandon Jensen was declared the winner in the second heat when apparent race winner Tom Chrest weighed in light at the scales. Modified heat winners saw Jason Miller come from the back to win the first heat and Dave Cain power his way to victory in the second heat. Two late model heats were completed before the rains came with Kelly Anderson and Mike Bear taking top honors. The third late model heat race was run the following Saturday night with Brent Larson taking the win.
The features for all five classes were postponed one week until Saturday night June 7. The NASCAR street stocks saw 13 of the scheduled 14 starters take the green for their 15 lap feature race. Corey Rosen used his pole starting position to full advantage, as he raced ahead of the field for the lead. Devin Neske ran a close second all race long, but was not able to get by Rosen in a race slowed only once under caution. Rosen drove to victory ahead of Neske with Jared Gross, Chanda Fjorden-Nord and Jeff Heintz rounding out the top five finishers.
The NASCAR midwest modified feature started 25 cars strong for 15 racing laps. Only one caution slowed the fast-paced race though. Bob Smith bolted into the lead from his outside row one starting position, as Dane Durbin applied the pressure. Laps continued to roll by with Smith and Durbin running up front and Shawn Phillips on the move forward. With 10 laps in, Clayton Wagamon blew a rear tire and debris littered turns 1 & 2. Mark Trog and Clark Perry spun in turn 1 while Dane Durbin saw his bid for a win end with a right front flat tire. Durbin drove pitside while Trog and Perry were given their spots back in the running order due to the debris caution. Two laps after the race returned to green, Shawn Phillips got by Smith for the lead. Phillips led the remaining laps enroute to his third straight feature victory at CLS. Completing the top five were Smith, Jason Vandekamp, Sam Nelson and rookie Jeremy Houle. Vince Corbin crossed the finish line in fifth but did not scale, negating what had been a fine run forward from his 14th starting spot.
Dan Carlson and Greg Nippoldt brought the NASCAR super stock field down for the green flag, as 16 of the scheduled 20 starters made the call for 20 laps of nonstop action. Carlson immediately grabbed the lead and never looked back. Mike Loomis drove past Nippoldt for second near the halfway mark. Mike Weber took over the third position from Nippoldt on lap 16. Carlson raced to the victory in front of Loomis, Weber, Nippoldt and 11th starter Cory Davis in the caution-free event.
Twenty two high powered NASCAR modifieds roared to life for their 20 lap feature race. The caution quickly flew as Mike Mueller slowed entering turn 3 requiring a complete restart. Scott Splittstoesser narrowly edged out fellow front row starter Kevin Viebrock to lead the opening lap. Viebrock raced by for the lead on lap 2 and proceeded to show the way for the next four laps. Jason Miller and Dave Cain were working their way forward from their 6th and 7th starting spots. Miller grabbed the lead on lap 6 from Viebrock and Craig Brightbill moved into second a lap later. Cain got by Brightbill and set his sights on Miller. On lap 12, Dave Cain slipped past Miller for the lead and began to slowly widen his margin. Suddenly as Cain entered turn one on lap 16, his car slammed into the turn one wall with the right rear, then the right front slapped the wall and a series of wild-looking flips ensued with his car coming to rest upright between turns 1 & 2. The crowd was stunned and the race was under red. Dave soon climbed from his battered racer to survey the damage. The car sustained heavy damage and was loaded on to the flatbed wrecker. For the four-time CLS track champion, his night would end early and he would not be able to race in the regular program that followed. Miller reassumed the lead at this point and held off Brightbill for the remaining five laps to record the win. Viebrock, Terry Hanson and Dave Lear completed the top five.
A strong field of 24 NASCAR dirt late models lined up for their 30 lap main event. It took a couple of tries to get the race underway, but when it went green Mike Bear blasted into the early lead from his outside row one starting position. Rick Egersdorf quickly assumed the runner-up spot and moved past Bear into the lead on lap 5. Brent Larson was steadily advancing from his 9th starting spot, and on lap 9 he took over the top spot from Egersdorf. The race was under its final caution less than a lap later when Jake Hiatt's car jumped out of gear and stalled in turn 4. Larson continued to lead when the race resumed. On lap 14, Ashley Anderson powered to the inside of Egersdorf in turn 2 to take over the second spot. Anderson quickly began closing the gap on the leader. Anderson raced ahead of Larson on lap 17. The race continued to run green all the way to the finish with Anderson earning the victory in front of Larson. Egersdorf held on to third in front of 10th starter Rick Hanestad. Kelly Anderson ended up fifth when Jim Carlson failed to go to the tech area after crossing the scales, nixing a fine fifth place finish for the 7c car. Completing the top ten were Mike Bear, Doug Herrick from 14th, Mike Nutzmann, Cory Mahder and 24th starter Randy Gullixson. It may have taken one extra week to complete the show, but the full program was now in the books instead of the weather having the final say.
