Roby Helm CARTERSVILLE, Ga. (June 2) - NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Regional point leaders Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS and Richie Stephens of Phenix City, AL each posted victories in Week 10 competition over the weekend.
Keeton took his fifth win of the season on Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park, and Stephens bagged win number four on Friday night at Penton Raceway in Penton, AL and win number five on Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL on Saturday night.
The defending and two-time NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion Keeton now holds an 82-point lead over Herman Reynolds of Laurel, MS in quest of his third straight title. Keeton has 499 points and Reynolds has 417 points. Both drivers have 11 starts.
Josh Huss of Flomaton, AL is third with 355 points in nine starts, and leads a tight battle in which 28 points separate the third through seventh positions.
Chris Griffin of Flomaton, AL is fourth with 350 points in nine starts, and Heath Gibson of Brewton, AL is fifth with 350 points in nine starts. Talbert Goldman of Meridian, MS is sixth with 342 points in eight starts, and Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS is seventh with 327 points in eight starts after taking the win on Friday night at Southern Speedway in Hattiesburg, MS.
Micha McCall of Flomaton, AL is eighth with 311 points, and Larry Murphy of Meridian, MS is ninth with 286 points. Seth Gransberry of Century, FL rounds out the top ten in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region with 281 points.
Mark Clifton of Brewton, AL is just one point out of the top ten, but is still on a roll, as his perfect season remained in tact after winning his sixth straight NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region victory in as many starts on Saturday night at Flomaton Speedway in Flomaton, AL.
In other NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region action on Saturday night, a pair of first time winners took the spotlight. Shawn Edwards of Louisville, MS was the winner at Columbus Speedway in Columbus, MS, and Tootie Arnold of Meadville, MS grabbed the victory at A1 Raceway in Slidell, LA.
Stephens leads the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region with 552 points in 13 starts, as he closes in on the 16 start mark after which he will begin netting points. A driver's 16 best finishes count towards his season point total, so if Stephens records a higher point total than his lowest point total in his 17th start, those points will override the lowest point score to date.
Stephens holds a 114-point lead over Larry Harrod of Plains, GA, who has 438 points in 11 starts. Adam Martin of Talladega, AL could be in a position to close quickly on Stephens as he nears the 16 race mark. Martin picked up his second win of the season on Saturday night at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL, and now has 432 points in just nine starts for the third spot in the points.
Behind the top three in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region points chase, just 29 points separate the fourth through tenth positions.
Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL is fourth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region with 420 points in 12 starts, and Anthony Meadows of Lanett, AL is fifth with 409 points in 10 starts. Jimmy Elkins Jr. of Talladega, AL is sixth with 402 points in nine starts, and Dillon Crim of Eastaboga, AL is seventh with 400 points in 11 starts.
Brian Ponder of Talladega, AL is eighth in the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS East Region standings with 396 points in nine starts, and the defending NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Champion Logan Yates of Delta, AL is ninth with 392 points in nine starts. Marc Gooden of Lafayette, AL rounds out the top ten in the East Region with 391 points in 11 starts.
In other NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region action on Saturday night, Steve Barnett of Franklin, IN kept his perfect season in tact with his third straight win in as many starts at Brownstown Speedway in Brownstown, IN. Barnett should begin to climb up the standings, as his last two wins were double-point races.
Jason Hiett of Lincoln, AL recorded his third win of the season at Green Valley Speedway in Glencoe, AL. Chattahoochee Valley Motor Speedway in Dothan, AL did not report their Saturday night results, but Russell Welch of Cottondale, FL did post his fifth win of the season on May 24.
