CUMBERLAND, Md. (May 30) - Dave Troutman led the entire distance to get the win in the opener for the Maryland Clash on Friday night at The Rock, Allegany County Speedway.

The five other classes in action produced four new winners as Bryan Kerns won the Sunoco Street Stock race, David Puckett won the TC Race Cars Hobby Stock race, Brian Diehl won the Classic Car race and Ray Shepherd won the Factory Stock 6-Cylinder race. Ryan Peer scored his second win in the Factory Stock 4-Cylinders.

The Bud Light No. 7 that D.J. Troutman drove to victory three weeks ago carried Dave to another resounding win as the Clash between The Rock and Hagerstown Speedway finally got underway with clear skies.

In the fifth attempt--two other dates at each track were met with rain--to kick off the mini-series for the Limited Late Models and Late Model Sportsman cars, Troutman had the competition covered throughout the night.

He won his heat race, started on the pole and led comfortably throughout to claim the $1,000 prize at the end of 30 laps. Six cautions and a few lapped cars kept the second-place car of Andy Fries, the two-time Hagerstown champion, within sight.

Fries made up some distance when Troutman approached a pack of cars at halfway, but lost his momentum when he was unable to clear traffic himself. Troutman was strong on the restarts and went on to win by a half of a straightaway.

Tyler Armstrong and Matt Sponaugle waged a battle for a position in the top five for much of the race. The two drivers spent laps 9-10 side by side for the fifth spot. Sponaugle temporarily held on. As Kyle Lear and Scott Palmer had problems, Sponaugle and Armstrong moved up third and fourth.

Armstrong finally cleared Sponaugle with four laps to go and Terry Flaherty rounded out the top five over Jerry Bard and Jamey Swank.

Kerns was a joyful winner after taking the No. 43 car built for his father to victory lane in the 16-lap Street Stock feature. Kerns started from the pole and went on to win by two seconds over Rick Wright, Jerry Robinson, Randy Zechman and Randy Wible.

Kerns led by as much as a half straightaway when the first of four cautions came out for a spin by Wible. Kerns went on uncontested through the other cautions.

Wright got around Zechman with two laps remaining for second and held off Robinson to the checkered flag.

Puckett picked up a hard-fought victory in the 15-lap Hobby Stock feature over Marcius VanMeter and Steve Fadley. The win was Puckett's first.

He took over the lead with a move on the outside of Fadley in turn three on lap two. VanMeter, who started seventh, closed in to make it a two-car battle to the finish.

VanMeter tried the high side to get around Puckett. After running side by side throughout lap six, Puckett prevailed. VanMeter stayed within a car length but couldn't make another move before the finish. Fadley,
R.T. Troutman and Jimmy Sacco completed the top five.

Peer, a rookie driver, put himself in contention with five laps to go. He won the 4-Cylinder race by 10 car lengths over Rob Prinkey.

Prinkey set the pace through lap seven. Peer, who started sixth, had climbed up to second by lap three. After racing side by side for the entire lap, Peer fought off Prinkey in turn four for the lead.

Dave Friend Jr., who started 14th, ended up third. Dwain Rhodes and Jason Riggleman completed the top five.

Diehl led the entire 15 laps of the Classic Car feature for the win over Joe Snodgrass. The top five cars broke away early before cautions began to slow the pace. The rest of the top five changed hands among Snodgrass, Pete Neal, Al Daniels and Brooks Coleman.

Snodgrass eventually secured second on lap seven. He trailed Diehl to the finish by five car lengths. Neal held off Daniels until lap 13 when Daniels spun under green and dropped to the rear. Bill Brown Jr. and Coleman completed the top five.

Shepherd managed to pick up the win in the inaugural 6-Cylinder race despite a sour engine.

Shepherd led Wade Peer through lap nine when his engine picked up a miss and began to smoke. Despite the failure, Shepherd continued on, caught Peer with one lap to go and recaptured the lead.

Peer, Bob Imes, Matt Stickley and Jay Imes completed the top five.

The Rock will be back in action on Sunday, June 8 with Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, Hobby Stocks, 4-Cylinders and 8-Cylinders. For more information about The Rock, visit the speedway's web site at www.therockspeedway.com.
