MONETT, Mo. (May 25) - Despite late afternoon showers fans and drivers alike pulled into the Monett Speedway Sunday night for the 8th annual Tony Roper Memorial.
31 DLRA late models took to the track for the 2nd appearance of the newly formed series. Jesse Stovall, Shane Essary, Will Vaught, and Terry Phillips took the heat race honors. Stovall, and Phillips were 1st to the green, with the duo, side by side into the 1st corner, Phillips gets a slight advantage coming out of 4 to lead the 1st circuit Jeremy Payne moves into the 3rd position with his nose on Stovall's bumper. Will Vaught, 4th, Justin Wells, 5th. Phillips stretches out his lead, only to have the caution wave on lap 15 for Billy Moyer Jr, slow on the back stretch. During the caution Vaught had to give up his 4th spot for a flat tire, sending him to the rear. When the green waved again, Phillips again pulled out to take the lead, as Stovall was trying to hang on to 2nd. Wells, Payne and Looney all fighting for the 3rd spot. Caution again waved on lap 27 as Looney pulled to the inside, having a flat right rear. Looney would have to retire his 14 machine for the night, also having mechanical trouble. With 13 laps to go, Phillips would again pull out to take the lead, and go unchallenged to bring home his 1st DLRA win. Stovall 2nd, Payne 3rd, Wells 4th, Vaught 5th.
Eric Turner dominated the modified event followed by Stovall, and Rex Merritt. Chris Darnell, Jody Tillman, and Burl Woods, were side by side for 20 laps in the factory stock division. At the checkers it was Darnell, picking up his 1st win of the season. Tillman 2nd, Woods 3rd. Danny Boyd won the bomber division over Corey Pope, and Ryan Johnson took the rookie class win, followed by Shawn Price
