Bill Poehler LEBANON, Ore. (May 25) - Trevor Glaser earned every bit of his first win of the season Saturday night at Willamette Speedway and Rob Mayea pulled off his second clean sweep of the season Sunday in the track's Memorial Classic.
Glaser, the three-time defending Outlaw Late Model champion out of Tangent at the 1/3-mile clay oval, passed leading Bob Boyd on the last turn of the overtime last lap of the A-Main for his first win of the season Saturday.
Sunday night, Mayea won the A-Main events in his No. 37 late model and modified, his second double dip of the season, following his identical triumphant night of May 10.
Glaser, who started 16th of 17 cars Saturday, slowly made his way up through the pack while Mark Carrell of Redmond set the pace in the lead.
On the 23rd lap, Rick got by Carrell to take lead the with Glaser following Bend driver Rob Mayea up through the field as Mayea was up to third with Glaser in fourth.
Boyd, however, rode the high line past both Mayea and Glaser and went after Hodges, passing him for the lead on the 38th lap.
The caution flag flew later that lap and Glaser beat Hodges to the caution flag to assume the second place on lap 39 and set up a two-lap shootout between former track champions Boyd and Glaser.
On the restart, Boyd looked stout and held the lead, but Glaser worked his way low under Boyd coming out of turn two and snagged the lead for good coming to the checkered flag.
Boyd placed second with Tory Swayngim of Sodaville in third, Hodges in fourth and Rob Campos of Keizer coming home fifth after running in the top five for much of the race.
Jason Wines of Lebanon, running the crate engine late model that has taken him to the Warriors of Dirt points lead this season, won the B-Main event from the 11th starting position.
Wines, who would go on to finish eighth in the A-Main, passed Ryan Gerig for the lead on the low side of the 18th of 25 laps and checked out on the field for the win with Gerig in second, and Todd Shandy, Wade Mock and Jayme Van rounding out the top five.
Jeremy Shank of Salem reaffirmed his title of Super Sport Super-Sub as he drove Jimmy Schram's No. 22 crate engine late model to the Super Sport A-Main event win.
Shank started the main in 12th, but moved into the top five on the third lap. He moved up to second on the eighth lap and set after leading Thomas Hunziker.
Shank got a scare while running on Hunziker's bumper when Hunziker got out of shape coming out of turn two, but Shank backed off and went around for the lead in turn three and never again trailed.
From there, Shank checked out on the field and won by a large margin in front of second-place Chance Hayman of Crooked River Ranch, Anthony Hopper and Steve Moore.
The show got a scare in the B-Main event.
With Dan Kingsberry and Ron Shinkle of Monmouth fighting it out for the lead, rain came, first in sprinkles and later in a downpour, which caused track officials to call the B-Main event and declare Kingsberry the winner.
The show was halted for 30 minutes, but the skies cleared and the track was saved to run the remaining three main events.
In the modified main event, Mayea looked to be a sure bet to win his fourth consecutive A-Main event, but he was caught up in a three-car wreck in turn two while leading with six laps to go. Mayea, the defending track champion in the modifieds, was able to continue on, but had to go to the back of the pack.
That gave the lead to Kevin Keeney of Sweet Home with teammate Chris Murphy in second. Keeney and Hackney checked out on the field to finish first and second and Mayea made a spectacular charge to finish third. Jordan Wright came from the eighth starting position to win the Sportsman A-Main event. Wright held off an all-star cast of Brad Hopkins (second place), Mike Bennett (third), Jason Sommer (fourth), Brian Goetz (fifth) and Brian Cronk (sixth) for the win.
Brad Landers won the Sportsman B-Main event with Mike Campbell in second and "Tubby Thomas" making a solid charge to place third.
John Nusom held off the Kingsberry's Bob and Dave to win the Classic Sportsman A-Main.
The track's surface was a significantly different challenge Sunday than what the drivers faced Saturday.
Keeney took the Outlaw main event lead from the pole position and held the top spot the first four laps before young Greg Brooks of Turner went by on the outside with his fiberglass-bodied Mustang.
Two laps later, fifth-starting Mayea got by Keeney for second and a lap later went to the high side of Brooks to take the lead for good. Mayea and Brooks checked out on the field on the subsequent restarts and Mayea went on to his second Outlaw win of the season while Brooks recorded his career-best finish of second place at the track.
Keeney held off hard charges to place third while Brett McCutcheon placed fourth with Mark Carrell right behind in fifth.
Joey Tanner passed leading Steven Sturdevan for the lead on the high side of the seventh lap and went on to win the B-Main event. Hard-charging Bob Boyd placed second with Sturdevan in third. Gary Smith won the Outlaw C-Main event.
In the modified A-Main, Mayea, the track's defending champion in the modifieds, passed leading Jessie Williamson for the lead coming to the white flag to pull off his fourth win in the class this season.
Keeney placed second with Williamson in third, Braedon Hand in fourth and Kelly Williamson in fifth. Doug Davenport won the B-Main event for the modifieds, transferred into the A-Main event and went on to place sixth in the A.
In Sunday's Super Sports, veteran Russ Sell passed Justin Evans for the lead on the 10th lap and went on to win the 25-lap tilt. Brian Smith finished second with Anthony Hopper in third and Shank in fourth. Darryl Blanchard won the B-Main event.
In the Sportsman A-Main, Sommer carved his way through the field to take the lead on the 10th lap and won by a straightaway better than Cronk and Bennett. Bill Slover won the Sportsman B-Main.
Bob Kingsberry won the Classic Sportsman A-Main with Robert Woullbrant in second and Dave Kingsberry in third. Jeremy Brookshire won the Classic Sportsman B-Main.
