Bob Appleget CLEVELAND, Tenn. (May 24) - Jake Knowles celebrated the Memorial Weekend with his first Cleveland Speedway Late Model win of the season Saturday night.
Knowles took the lead from pole sitter Randy Burrows at the halfway point of the 30-lap Late Model feature. He spent the remaining 15 laps battling with Burrows as the two swapped the lead back and fourth. Knowles would take the lead for good with to laps to go to score his first Cleveland Speedway feature win.
Starting on the outside of the second row Knowles would take the second spot behind Burrows at the drop of the green. On the sixth circuit Lamar Scoggins would move past Knowles to take second and a shot at the leader. After six laps in third Knowles moved back into second and began working on Burrows until he made the winning pass three laps later.
Following Knowles, Burrows and Scoggins across the stripe were Brian Hickman and Bobby Mayse. Jason Welshan, Jeff Franklin, Dewayne Powell, Nick Yancy and Shorty Frazier rounded out the top 10.
Starting on the pole Chris Beavers wired the field to take the Limited/Crate Late Model feature win. John Ownbey and Brian Pritchard would have a lively battle for second with Ownbey winning that battle and finishing second. Pritchard would settle for third with Justin Litchford and Bobby Doss rounding out the top five.
Tanner Works continued his winning ways as he made it five consecutive A-Hobby feature wins. Works, who started fourth, charged to second on the first lap of the 20 lap event. He would shadow leader Arva Lee Brooks for the first seven circuits before taking advantage of Brooks misfortune and moving into the lead. For the remainder of the event he would lead Kenny Pierce and Robbie Green to the checkers. Tommy Miller was fourth and Gary Johnson fifth.
While Works is making short work of the A-Hobby division, Patrick Harvey is doing the same in B-Hobby. Starting mid-pack, Harvey had his work cut out for him, but at the end of the event the result was the same as it had been for the previous three B-Hobby features with Harvey taking the top spot. Michael Anderson would finish second, Buck Hoffman third, Roy Baker fourth and John Barats fifth.
After starting ninth in the 17 car Pony starting field Billy Callahan moved into the second spot behind leader Jimmy Brown on lap nine and past Brown for the lead four laps later. Callahan would hold off Brown for the remaining laps to take the win. Danny Burnette was third, Wendell Ingram fourth and Jimmy Elliott fifth.
Billy Bailey took the Front Runner feature win with a flag-to-flag run. James Bragg was second and was followed across the stripe by John Petty, Jeff Curvin and Robert Johnson.
Next week Cleveland Speedway will feature a full racing program including Super Late Models, Limited/Crate Late Models, A&B Hobby, Pony and Front Runners.
