Delph Communications BRASSTOWN, N.C. (May 21) - Ray Cook and his #53 Dirt Late Model team racked up their fifth win of the 2008 racing season in exciting fashion on Friday night, May 16 at the North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth, Georgia! Ray was third quick during qualifying and later won his heat race, which earned him the inside second row starting spot for the $2,000 to win main event. The Brasstown, North Carolina native then trailed leader Dale McDowell throughout the entire 40-lapper until McDowell came up lame in turn three heading to the checkered flag. Ray was there to pounce on McDowell's misfortunate and captured the $2,000 payday ahead of Jake Knowles, Brian Hickman, Dale McDowell, and Ivedent Lloyd.
The "Tarheel Tiger" then set his sights on the Cleveland Speedway in Cleveland, Tennessee on Saturday evening, May 17, as he was eligible for an extra $1,000 bonus if he could win the $5,000 to win O'Reilly Southern Allstars Series (OSAS) event. Ray timed in tenth fastest in OSAS qualifying and later rolled off from the outside of the fifth row for the 50-lap main event. The driver of the #53 MasterSbilt / Grover entry could not find victory lane at Cleveland on Saturday, but did notch a solid seventh place performance. "I would rather be lucky than good sometimes," smirked Cook when asked about his last lap heroics at North Georgia. "Dale (McDowell), no question, had the car to beat, but we had a strong second place car. Unfortunately for him, he suffered some problems on the last lap and we were right there to capitalize. Then at Cleveland on Saturday, we threw some different things at the car to go after that bonus and those changes did not work."
The Ray Cook Racing team is currently prepping their equipment for the big Memorial Day holiday weekend! The 16th Annual 'O'Reilly Show-Me 100' will kick things off at the West Plains Motor Speedway in West Plains, Missouri from May 22-24. An open practice session will be held at the 3/8-mile, red-clay speedplant on Thursday night, May 22, while qualifying and six heat races will highlight the action on Friday evening, May 23. The Race of Champions, Manufacturer's Dash, and three consolation events will then precede the annual 'Show-Me 100' on Saturday. The 100-lap A-Main will pay a whopping $42,000 to the winner and $4,200 just to start the race. Ray won the prestigious event back in 2000. Following the mega-event at West Plains, Ray is then scheduled to trek to the Duck River Speedway in Wheel, Tennessee on Sunday, May 25.
