Roby Helm CARTERSVILLE, Ga. (May 19) - Steve Barnett of Franklin, IN drove the J.D. Byrider/Tony Stewart Racing Rayburn to his second straight victory on Saturday night at Brownstown Speedway in NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region action for the Group Metal Recyclers Late Model Division. Barnett raced 17 of the 20 laps side-by-side with Steve Godsey of Bedford, IN.
On lap 18, Godsey jumped the outside berm in turn four, and lost two positions. The defending NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series Indiana State Champion would have to settle for fourth in the King Distributors Rayburn. Derek Fisher of Columbus, IN finished second in the Rayburn Race Cars Rayburn.
NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Championship contender Jeff Fields of Aragon, GA drove the Godsey Racing Rayburn to a third-place finish, and Bryan Bernhardt of Clearwater, FL rounded out the top five in the B&B Precision Mow Rocket.
Richie Stephens of Phenix City, AL picked up his third win of the season on Friday night at Penton Raceway in Penton, AL, and followed that up with a second-place effort on Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL to increase his point lead in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region.
Stephens has three wins, eight top five finishes, and ten top 10 finishes in 10 starts for 428 points. He leads Larry Harrod of Plains, GA by 76 points. Harrod has 352 points with one win, five top fives, and seven top tens in nine starts. Anthony Meadows of Lanett, AL is third with 321 points after three wins, and six top fives in eight starts.
Blake Stewart of Centre, AL was the winner on Saturday night at Green Valley Speedway in Glencoe, AL to move up to fourth in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region standings with 319 points. Stewart has two wins, five top fives, and six top tens in eight starts. Chase Edge of LaFayette, AL celebrated his 15th birthday by moving up to fifth with 308 points.
Adam Martin of Talladega, AL and Marc Gooden of LaFayette, AL are tied for the sixth spot with 286 points, and Jimmy Elkins Jr. of Talladega, AL is eighth with 274 points. Brian Ponder of Talladega, AL is ninth with 270 points, and Dillon Crim of Eastaboga, AL rounds out the top ten in the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS East Region standings with 262 points.
In other NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region action over the weekend, Terrance Nowell of Phenix City, AL picked up his second win of the season on Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway, and Jason Hiett of Lincoln, AL won the season opener on Friday night at Fort Payne Motor Speedway in Fort Payne, AL.
Fort Payne Motor Speedway will be in action during the Memorial Day Holiday weekend on Monday night with gates opening at 4 p.m. and racing scheduled for 6 p.m. Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL and Chattahoochee Valley Motor Speedway in Dothan, AL did not report their Saturday night results.
Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS continued his string of top three finishes on Saturday night at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, MS in quest of his third straight NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Championship. Keeton finished third at WMP to lead the West Region standings with 316 points. Keeton has four wins, one second, and one third in six starts.
Herman Reynolds of Laurel, MS is second in the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS West Region with 276 points, followed by Talbert Goldman of Meridian, MS in third with 248 points, and Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS in fourth with 247 points. Josh Huss of Flomaton, AL is fifth with 239 points, and Heath Gibson of Brewton, AL is sixth with 230 points.
Chris Griffin of Flomaton, AL holds down the seventh spot in the West Region standings with 229 points, and Micha McCall of Flomaton, AL moved up to the eighth spot with 211 points. Larry Murphy of Meridian, MS is ninth with 210 points, and Tootie Arnold of Meadville, MS rounds out the top ten in the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region with 196 points.
In NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region action on Saturday night, Jim McDuffie of Meridian, MS took his second straight win of the season at Whynot Motorsports Park, and Mark Clifton of Brewton, AL posted his third win of the season at Flomaton Speedway in Flomaton, AL. A pair of drivers took their first wins of the season with Jeremiah Oalmann of McComb, MS taking the victory at Pike County Speedway in McComb, MS, and Danny Joe Thomas of Foley, AL winning at A1 Raceway in Slidell, LA. Butler County Motorsports Park in Greenville, AL did not report their Saturday night results.
