Jack Walbring QUINCY, Ill. (May 18) - Jason Frankel, Michael Long, Jake Wenig and Aaron Brocksieck all took feature event wins at Quincy Raceways on Sunday, May 18 during Budweiser/Rinella Distributing Night at the Races.
Jason Frankel started the main event of the Budweiser J&J Steel IMCA Late Models in the seventh row and it looked like it would take a small miracle for him to get to the front of the field in thirty laps but disaster struck on the first lap. Steve Grotz got loose in turn two after the drop of the green flag and a major pileup brought the field to a halt as the red flag flew. Grotz rolled his mount as at least five other cars piled into the mess. Grotz was transported to an area hospital for treatment, but he was alert and talking with the safety crew while being extracted from his destroyed car. Frankel took advantage of the ensuing restart by moving into the third row as for the second attempt to get the event underway. It only took Frankel five laps to get to the top spot of the thirty lap feature and that was all it took for Frankel to claim his third feature event win of the weekend, as he had won at Lee County on Friday and Burlington on Saturday. Kevin Tomlinson gave it all he had to stay with Frankel but had to settle for the second spot followed by Terry Gallaher in third, Lonnie Bailey in fourth and Robbie Warner in fifth. Matt Bailey, Tomlinson and Jason Perry were the heat race winners while Frankel claimed the win in the Summy Tire and Auto Center Trophy Dash. Frankel's feature win pulled him to a three way tie with Joey Gower and Justin Reed in the points battle.
Michael Long continued his dominance of the Miller Lite Modified Division as he capture yet another feature event win, his fifth in a row this season at Quincy. Long started in the fifth row of the main event and it took him only five laps to get to the front of the field. Long pulled out to ca comfortable lead and was never threatened even during the several restarts brought on by a rash of yellow flags. Long led Brandon Lennox, Tony Dunker, Steven DeLonjay and Robbie Reed for the top five finishers. Wyatt Lantz, Jarod Schlipman and Long were the heat race winners with Lantz also winning the Advance Trading Trophy Dash. Long has a thirteen point margin over Tony Dunker in the race for the Track Points Championship.
Jake Wenig made his second trip to Quincy Raceways a good one by taking his first feature win in the fledgling Triple R Performance Engines Sunoco IMCA Stock Cars. Wenig got the lead from Chris Webb on the fourth lap and held of the furious charges of John Oliver Jr. to the twenty fifth lap when the checkered flag fell. Oliver settled for second followed by Webb in third, Steve Steinkuhler in fourth and Levi Long in fifth. Webb and Oliver were the heat race winners. Chris Wibbell now leads the points chase over Oliver, Jeff Mueller, Abe Huls and Webb as only eleven points separate the top five drivers.
Aaron Brocksieck took over the lead from Travis Booher in the Tim's Machine Shop Hobby Stock main event on the sixth lap and held off Steve Carlin the rest of the way to the checkered flag. Carlin challenged Brocksieck but was unable to make the pass and had to settle for the second spot followed by Wes Mayfield in third, Jim Powell in fourth and Steve Watkins Jr. in fifth. Carlin and Brocksieck took the heat race wins. Booher was later disqualified as he moved his car from the tech area and loaded it before completing the inspection process.
