LEBANON, Ore. (May 17) - John Duty beat one of the best rim riders at his own game.

The driver from Portland took the lead on the lap 9 restart and rode the high side to victory, holding off hard-charging Trevor Glaser for his first Outlaw Late Model A-Main event victory at Willamette Speedway this season at Saturday night's Pepsi Night at the Races.

Fifteen cars started the main event on the 1/3-mile clay oval -- not including fast timer Cody Sell, who blew his engine -- but three were knocked out after the second lap.

After the first lap was completed, fourth-running Rick Wyatt spun all on his own in turn one and drove across the track attempting to continue on, causing a 10-car pileup in turn one to bring out a red flag. The cars of Jeremy Shank, Ryan Gerig and Bruce Hipple were brought to the pits and did not return.

On the restart, outside polesitting Randy Boyd of Lebanon took the lead and started to check out on the field, but Duty made his way from his fifth starting position and made his way to second by the third lap.

On the ninth lap, Boyd was running the high side out of turn two when Wyatt spun in front of the leader, forcing Boyd into the wall. Boyd managed to continue, but on the restart, Duty went past Boyd quickly into the lead and checked out. On lap 13, Boyd's car came to a stop in turn two with a broken axel.

Duty extended his lead, but Glaser, one of the driver's involved in the first red flag, was making his way through the field and was into fourth on lap 17. Glaser, a three-time Willamette Speedway champion in the Outlaws, made his way past Bob Boyd for second on lap 24, but was well behind the hard-running Duty and wasn't making up much ground on the leader.

Help for Glaser came on lap 35 of 40 when Randy Neal spun in turn three, bringing out a red flag and closing up the field.

On the restart, Glaser quickly made his way by the lapped car of John Campos, and went after Duty. Duty ran strong on the high side and Glaser's last-lap try on the low side was for naught as Duty picked up the $1,000 win in his first appearance at the track this season.

Glaser, of Tangent, settled for second with 14th-starting Rob Mayea of Bend in third, Bob Boyd in fourth and Tory Swayngim in fifth. Rounding out the top five were Darren Coffell, Brady Sell, filling in his father's car, Mike Miller, Campos and Neal.

Brett McCutcheon of Sweet Home passed leading Neal on the low side with 11 of 30 laps remaining to pick up the win in the Outlaw B-Main event. Brady Sell finished third in his own car with Todd Shandy in third and Justin Dittman in fourth.

Ron Burchard of Philomath made his way past leading Brian Smith with three laps to go and went on to win the Super Sport A-Main event. Smith finished second with Chris Mott in third. James Slover won the Super Sport B-Main.

Mayea made another impressive run through the modified field from the back to win his second A-Main event in a row. Chris Murphy placed second with Rob Jeffers in third after leading the first nine laps of the race.

Jason Somer passed leading Danny Altom for the lead on the high sided of the 11th lap and went on to win the Sportsman A-Main event and Brad Hopkins placed second. Bill Gibbs won the Sportsman B-Main.

Dennis Krohling backed up his fast time by winning the Classic Sportsman A-Main event, beating out Robert Duncan and Bob Kingsberry.

Willamette Speedway's schedule continues with a doubleheader next weekend with the Memorial Classic Saturday, May 24 and Sunday, May 25.
