SANTA MARIA, Calif (May 10) - Late Model Stocks, D&S Automotive IMCA Modifieds, Factory Stocks and Mini Stocks brought the 1/3-mile oval to life Saturday night at Santa Maria Speedway.

Brad Pounds, of Bakersfield, started outside the third row in the 30-lap Late Model Stock main event and went on to out-duel point leader Steve Drake, of San Luis Obispo, for his first career feature victory. Nick Bartels, of El Segundo, came home third ahead of Bakersfield's John Lowrey and Buena Park's Billy Griffin. Drake, Griffin and Rob Sanders, of Bakersfield, won the 8-lap heat races and Drake set fast time of 14.115 seconds.

Danny Lauer, of Santa Maria, captured his first 25-lap feature victory of the season to displace Nipomo's Kenny Kirkpatrick as the IMCA Modified point leader. Kirkpatrick had his worst run of the year, to date, placing 18th. April 26 main event winner Clay Daly, of Watsonville, placed second, followed by Rich Denman, of Coalinga; Chad Weber, of Arroyo Grande; and, Sean Minor of Bakersfield. The 8-lap heat races were taken by Bakersfield drivers Shane Jones and Steve Ayler and Santa Maria's Doug Thornton.

Will no one end Theo Van De Sande's winning streak in the Factory Stock class? The Carpinteria driver notched his third straight victory in the 20-lap feature event. Point leader Kirk Morgan, of Santa Maria, managed a second place finish against the streaking Van De Sande but his point lead shrank to a mere 3 markers. Arroyo Grande's Kevin Linson, Atascadero's Charlie Scovell and Terra Bella's Ray Pezzi rounded out the top-five. Morgan and Goleta's Matt Marchiando scored 8-lap heat race wins.

Another first time season winner cropped up in the 20-lap Mini Stock main when Santa Maria's Frank Nyback outgunned Lompoc's Mike Weigel for the victory. Third place Jeremy Heroux, of Nipomo, finished in front of point leader Justin Marsh, of Nipomo, and Ben Caswell of Santa Barbara. Arroyo Grande's Justin Crockett, Nipomo's Chris Larsen and Heroux claimed 8-lap heat race victories.

Next Saturday night Western Allstars Late Model Stocks will make their debut at Santa Maria Speedway with 30 plus cars expected to make an appearance. D&S Automotive IMCA Modifieds and Mini Stocks will make up the remainder of the program. Spectator gates will open at 3:00 p.m., with qualifying at 5:15 p.m. and racing at 6:00 p.m. Admission prices will be $20.00 for adults, $16.00 for seniors (65+), $5.00 for children six to twelve, five and under free.
