SPRING VALLEY, Minn. (May 3) - After receiving one inch of rain in the past 24 hours the crew at Deer Creek Speedway went about the task of preparing the racing surface for their season opener. It was the opener but it didn't feel like it to many as the four week delay from Mother Nature took away some of the hype normally associated with the opening weekend. The weather was chilly with strong winds during the afternoon which actually aided in the drying process of the pits, parking lots and racing surface. The winds calmed down during the evening hours helping in keeping the chill out of the bones quite as early in the evening for the nice crowd gathered to watch the racing action. It actually was a very nice night on the Fastenal, Stone Machinery, McNeilus Steel night as the crowd hung around to the very end of the racing action.

The twenty five lap Valley Featherlite WISSOTA Late Model feature showed the rest of the classes how to do it running without a caution and clicking off all twenty five laps in fast fashion. John Kaanta has been snake bit over the past couple years at Deer Creek but tonight was his night. Kaanta took off at the green with the lead followed by Nick Herrick and Lance Matthees. Matthees started to work on Herrick for second while Keith Foss, Dennis Hillson and Darrin Korthals were three wide mid pack. Brent Larson, Mike Prochnow and Jesse Redetzke had a three wide battle for seventh early on. Marshall Fegers and Jake Redetzke raced side by side for fifth. With ten laps completed the high speed late models were working into lapped traffic. Matthees kept working on Herrick with Mark Teske following closely behind them. With Seven to go Matthees finally got past Herrick but Herrick shot back around and moved alongside of Kaanta for the lead. Next lap Matthees again got back into second and chased down Kaanta. As the white flew Kaanta held a slim half car lead over Matthees, but held on for the win with Herrick holding down third, Teske fourth and Jake Redetzke fifth.

Tim's Repair and Towing WISSOTA Street Stocks were the first class to pull out onto the speedway for the first feature event of the season. AJ Zvorak grabbed the lead coming out of turn two from the outside front row only to have a red falg halt the action as Chris Poff had a light roll out of turn two on the opening lap. On the ensuing restart Michael Conrad shot out front from the front row with Danny Hanson working under Zvorak for second. Ryan Goergen, Clark Swartz were side by side for fifth while most of the field behind them raced for positions. Conrad pulled into a small lead with three completed. A couple laps later the top five spread out slightly while the rest of the field kept up their side by side battles for position. Zvorak was saved early as he spun in turn two as the caution was coming out for another car spinning in turn two, keeping his third position. On another restart with eleven to go Danny Hanson looped his car in four sending him to the back. On the restart Conrad paced the field with Zvorak in second, Goergen in third while Chuck Neralnd and Troy Voth rounded out the top five. Zvorak stayed close to Conrad and too close once as he pushed Conrad into turn three spinning Conrad out and bringing out another caution as Zvorak went to the tail. Conrad held on for the win followed by Goergen and Nerland.

The Eighteen lap Dirt Doctor Trucking WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature started out wild with two and three wide racing all through the field for three laps until Brandon Davis took control of the racing action with AJ Wiste behind him in second. Kenny Wytaske was in third with Dan Wheeler and Jerry Young rounding out the top five. Wheeler moved into second on lap six as he dove low under Wytaske and Wiste to take the spot. On a late restart with seven to go Davis was still up front chased by Wheeler, Wiste, Michael Truscott and Jerry Young. For the last seven laps Davis and Wheeler raced side by side with Wheeler low and Davis high, while Truscott and Young did the same with Truscott high and Young low. These two battles kept the crowd enthused to the end with Davis taking home the win followed by Wheeler, Wiste Truscott and Young.

The US Army WISSOTA Super Stocks took to the track for their twenty lap feature event with Curt Myers taking the lead from the number one starting spot. Ryan Siegle sat in second with Brandon Jensen quickly coming up to race him for second. A three wide race waged for fourth as the first caution flew with two down. On the restart Siegle and Aaron Wilson raced for third with many two and three wide battles as the field tries to settle down for a long green flag run Siegle stays in third with eight complete while Wilson now has his hands full with Dustin Nelson and Chris Klinger chasing him down in three wide formation through the corners. Nelson shrugged off Klinger as he moved alongside of Siegle for the third spot. Dan Carlson moved into the top five as he worked past Wilson. Siegle brought out the next caution and on the restart Nelson moved alongside of Jensen for the second place battle with Carlson watching intently behind. They field stays that way until a final caution sets up a green, white checker dash to the finish. As the field came to the white Jensen moved alongside of Myers for the lead. Myers was too strong up top and held on for the win. Jensen came home second with Nelson, Carlson and Ed Sanders rounding out the top five.

With the second largest car count of the night in the EZ fabricating USRA Modifieds the fans saw great heat race action all night long in the popular class Tim Donlinger drew the front row starting spot and used it to power around the pole sitter Mike Sorensen for the lead on lap one. Donlinger powered around the top side the rest of the feature race. Early on Todd Scharkey was fast up top and moved up to just outside of the top five from twelfth on the first lap. Kelly Shryock kept Sorensen busy early working him on the bottom side of the speedway. Twenty one to go and Mark Noble and Brad Waits were side by side for fourth. The first caution flew as Noble and Scharkey got together on the front stretch as Scharkey t ried to get around Noble for fifth. Donlinger again blasted away from the field with Sorensen in tow.Joey Jensen, Nate Wasmund and Bob Timm raced three wide for seventh was Ryan Gustin and Steve Wezstein raced for fifth. The field stayed pretty much in tow for the rest of the race as Donlinger moved out to a full straight away lead as he took home the first win of the season.

Racing action resumes on Saturday May 10 with action in all five classes at the speedway.
