Bill Roth PADUCAH, Ky. (May 1) - 110 racecars and drivers from eight states and Canada jammed the PIR pit area for this unique Thursday night "regular" racing program. Two of the out-of-state invaders captured feature event checkered flags.
UMP Late Models In a last turn-last lap pass, Terry Casey of New London, WI edged Justin Ratliff and Dylan Thompson for the win. John Tindal, a heat race winner, had paced the field from lap 2 through a caution flag on lap 18 when Casey caught him in lapped traffic. Casey also was a heat race winner.
UMP Modifieds Rod Reed won the hotly contested feature over 2007 track champion Justin Houston, Randle Sweeney, and Canadian Steve Arpin. Arpin, Reed, and Bryce Jewell captured heat race wins.
UMP Crate Late Models Tait Davenport fought off a hard-charging Tanner English for the win. Matt Liner was third. Each of these top three feature finishers was a heat race winner.
UMP Street Stocks Steve Maisel led every lap to win his first main event of the season. Poncho Elder and Paul Howard followed to the checkers. Maisel and Howard won the heats.
Super Cell Mini Sprints Another invader, Tyler Reddick from Corning, CA, bested heat winner Jarrett Cathey and Derek Hogue.
4 cylinder Warriors Jeffrey Bailey was a two-time winner. In the held over feature (rained out Friday, April 25), he took the lead in turn three of the last lap to get the win over Keaton Downing and Jaren Frick. In the regularly scheduled main event, Bailey led every lap for the win over Downing and Matt Hartman. Heat race winners were Bailey, Downing, and Emily Crowell.
Saturday, May 10, the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars make their only appearance of the season. Local divisions also competing will be the UMP Modifieds and Street Stocks, plus the Super Cell Mini Sprints.
Friday night racing on May 9 will make it a double-header weekend at PIR. "Mom's Night" will include carnations and roses from the Rose Garden in Paducah for all Moms plus a six-division program for UMP Late Models, Modifieds, Crate Late Models, and Street Stocks, along with the 4 cylinder Warriors, and double features for the Vintage cars. NASCAR Stars Dale Earnhardt, Jr, Ken Schrader, and Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Paducah International Raceway in November of 2005.
