Bill Roth PADUCAH, Ky. (April 28) - Dirt trackin' is happenin' one night earlier this week. A six-division race program is planned for Thursday evening, May 1, as PIR attempts to get its "regular" racing season underway. So far this season, only the Nights of NASCAR Stars (March 28 and April 25) have been held. Sadly, the weatherman decided that the three regular Friday night events scheduled in between NASCAR Nights should not happen. Track officials are hoping that the unique Thursday Night program will dodge this year's all-too-frequent Friday rain bullet.
This Thursday, heats and features are scheduled for the UMP Super Late Models, Modifieds, Pro (Crate) Late Models, and Street Stocks, along with the 4 cylinder Warriors, and - because of rainouts earlier in the season - the first appearance of the Super Cell Mini Sprints.
Thursday, pit gates open at 4 PM, the grandstand ticket office and gates will open at 5 PM. Racing begins at 7:30 PM. Adult grandstand admission is $10, children 12 and under are admitted free. Pit admission is $25, minor releases are required.
Planning and preparations continue for the season's only visit of the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars on Saturday, May 10. It'll be an "all open wheel" show as the local Modifieds and Mini Sprints will be added to a full program for the winged sprint cars from all over the nation. This three-division open wheel show will be the second event of a twin race weekend beginning Friday, May 9 with a regular six-division Friday Night program.
NASCAR Stars Dale Earnhardt, Jr, Ken Schrader, and Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Paducah International Raceway in November of 2005. Two-time NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart joined the trio of co-owners as a partner in September of 2006. In 2008 the 3/8th mile high-banked oval will host several high profile events including three NASCAR Nights of Stars, the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars, the USA World 50, and the Tri-Track Challenge. PIR races every Friday night and is located off Interstate 24 at exit 11 in Paducah, Kentucky. For more information call the PIR hotline at (270) 448-4PIR or the track at (270) 898-SHOW (7469).
