Roby Helm CARTERSVILLE, Ga. (April 28) - Several drivers made moves up the point standings after Week Five of the 2008 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series in both the East and West Regions. Dana Eiland of Salem, AL and Lucky Keeton of Toomsuba, MS lead the East and West Regions respectively.
Bryan Bernhardt of Versailles, IN took the win at Brownstown Speedway in NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region action on Saturday night, the inaugural GMR Late Model Division race at the historic ¼-mile dirt oval. Bernhardt now holds a one-point lead over David Daughtery of Carmel, IN in the track points chase.
Eiland had a mechanical problem in the main event on Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway in Phenix City, AL, pitted for repairs, and then charged back through the field for a seventh-place finish, his fifth top ten finish in five starts. Eiland has 220 points, and holds a six-point lead over Richard Stephens of Phenix City, AL, who has 214 points in five starts.
The defending NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region Champion Logan Yates of Delta, AL used a pair of top ten finishes over the weekend at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, AL to climb into the third spot in the East Region standings with 204 points in five starts.
Anthony Meadows of Lanett, AL picked up his second NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series win of the season on Saturday night at East Alabama Motor Speedway, and is fourth in the East Region points chase with 200 points in five starts.
Adam Martin of Talladega, AL used his third and fourth straight second-place finish at Talladega Short Track in four starts to move up to the fifth position with 192 points. Brian Ponder of Talladega, AL and Blake Stewart of Centre, AL are tied for sixth with 184 points. Ponder has four straight third-place finishes at TST.
Jimmy Elkins Jr. of Talladega, AL rang up his second NeSmith Chevrolet WRS win of the season at Talladega Short Track on Saturday night, and now has 180 points in four starts to ride in the eighth spot of the East Region standings. Larry Harrod of Plains, GA is ninth with 174 points in four starts, and Montana Dudley of Phenix City, AL rounds out the top ten in the East Region with 163 points in five starts.
In other NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series East Region action during the week, National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame Inductee Ronnie Johnson of Chattanooga, TN took the win on Thursday night at Green Valley Speedway in Glencoe, AL. Cory Korreckt of Lincoln, AL was the winner on Friday night at Talladega Short Track. Penton Raceway in Penton, AL rained out on Friday night.
The NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region was off over the weekend due to the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series National Touring event at Pike County Speedway in McComb, MS on Friday night, but drivers that entered that race earned ten bonus points in their home Region.
Keeton picked up ten bonus points for entering the Pike County Speedway race, and now has 250 points. Herman Reynolds of Laurel, MS and Shannon Lee of Lumberton, MS are tied for second spot and now trail Keeton by 52 points. Reynolds and Lee each have 198 points.
Meridian, MS drivers Talbert Goldman and Larry Murphy are in the fourth and fifth spots respectively in the NeSmith Chevrolet WRS West Region standings. Goldman has 172 points, and Murphy has 140 points. Tootie Arnold of Meadville, MS picked up ten bonus points at PCS and now has 134 points in the sixth spot.
Three other drivers used their ten bonus points from the NeSmith Chevrolet DLMS National Touring race at Pike County Speedway to move into the top ten of the Weekly Racing Series West Region point standings.
Michael Santangelo of St. Rose, LA moved up to seventh with 126 points, Curt Lipsey of Tickfaw, LA climbed into eighth with 123 points, and Michael Sibley of Livingston, LA is now ninth with 121 points. Josh Huss of Flomaton, AL rounds out the top ten of the NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region standings with 119 points.
