JAMAICA, Va. (April 25) - Ben Bowie of Brandywine, MD may be a rookie in the Victory Lap Late Model class at Bill Sawyer's Virginia Motor Speedway in Jamaica, VA, but he didn't show it as he held off a furious charge by multiple drivers to take home his first division win in the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature on Cintas / WIGO Night at the Races.
It took several starts to get the feature under way and when the first lap was finally recorded Bowie had emerged as the leader. Bowie battled with Cusic for the lead losing it briefly on lap 18, only to regain the lead with when caution came out. Bowie had to hold off Cusic several more times on way to picking up his first victory in the division.
"I knew once we got this car dialed in this team could win a race, I saw Cusic's nose several times, and I just tried to hold my line while in the lead," commented Bowie in victory lane.
Rounding out the top five were Austin Hubbard, Donnie Marshall, Jr., Ronald Cusic and Tom Cohick.
In other action Brandon Galloway of Gloucester, VA inherited the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature lead when leader Brian Maxey spun with five to go and then motored on for his first victory of 2008. In the New Generation Racing Sprint Car 25 lap feature Daren Bolac of Moyock, NC worked his way from eighth to challenge and take the lead on lap 8 with a slide job on Mary Anne Williams of Chester, VA and then cruised to his third win in a row. In the Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Brett Adkins of Gloucester, VA and Bob Terry of Stafford, VA put on the night's best race with Adkins taking the lead on lap 14 and then cruising to his second win of the season.
It took a couple of starts to get everyone settled down and racing in the Victory Lap Late Model 35 lap feature but when they did Ben Bowie emerged as the leader. Working his way to the front, Ronald Cusic, used every bit of the track to get to second.
Cusic began to look for a way around Bowie and on lap 11 tried the inside of Bowie only to have to settle for second. Cusic kept the pressure on Bowie as Tom Cohick, Donnie Marshall Jr. and Austin Hubbard battled for third on back with Hubbard taking the spot.
On lap 18 Cusic got a run to the inside of Bowie to take the lead, only to have caution come out and sending him back to second.
On lap 22, with Bowie out to a two car length advantage, Hubbard began to pressure Cusic for second with Cusic able to hold the spot. On lap 27 Walker Arthur looked inside Hubbard for second but bobbled in turn 2 and lost three spots. On lap 29 it was three wide between Cohick, Marshall and Arthur in turn 4 for fourth.
On lap 32 Arthur and Marshall raced side by side out of turn 2, the two touched with Arthur brushing the wall and spinning down the back stretch. On the restart Bowie pulled away with Hubbard diving to the inside of Cusic in turn 1, completing the slide job in turn 2 for second. Hubbard had nothing for the leader as Bowie went on to pick up his first victory at Virginia Motor Speedway. Rounding out the top five were Austin Hubbard, Donnie Marshall, Jr., Ronald Cusic and Tom Cohick. Bowie also picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with the victory.
In the Budweiser Modified 25 lap feature Eric Erwin of Beaver Dam, VA and Brian Maxey of King George, VA led the field to green only to have caution come out for a spin by Dan Arnold of Petersburg, VA.
With the complete restart Erwin and Maxey raced side by side until turn 3 where Maxey turned up the wick and began to pull away. Maxey looked in control distancing himself from Erwin and the rest of the field. On lap 8 Maxey began working heavy lapped traffic. On lap 9 maxey got into a lapped car, bottling up the field and bringing out a caution for contact between third place Brian Dobie and fourth place Josh Harris, ending both their nights.
On the restart Maxey once again began to pull away. On lap 10 point leader matt Marshall pulled to the infield with mechanical problems. On lap 13 the battle was for third between Joey Polevoy and Brandon Galloway with Galloway taking the spot out of turn 4.
On lap 17 Erwin's second place run came to an end as he pulled to the infield with mechanical problems. On lap 20 leader Maxey's night went terribly wrong; with a 10 car length advantage Maxey looped it in turn 4 to bring out the caution. That handed the lead over to Galloway with Polevoy, Page Harrison, Kelly Samuels and Lance Grady the top five heading to the restart.
Over the last five laps Galloway pulled away and cruised to the victory with Polevoy holding off Harrison at the line for second and his best finish at VMS. Rounding out the top five were Kelly Samuels and Lance Grady. Dustin Bishop picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with a tenth place finish.
In the Limited Stock Car 20 lap feature Ryan Toole of Richmond, VA and Marty Coltrain of Richmond, VA led the field to green, but it was seventh place starter Bob Terry of Stafford, VA who would lead the first circuit.
Fast qualifier Brett Adkins of Gloucester, VA worked his way from sixth to take third from Coltrain on lap 3. On lap 4 Adkins took second from Toole in turn1. On lap 5 Adkins went after Terry for the lead with caution coming out on lap sixth when Toole lost a left rear tire on the front stretch.
On the restart the battle for the lead heated up as Terry worked feverously to hold off Adkins. Adkins beat on the back bumper of Terry working to his inside in turn 2 only to have Terry slam the door in turn 3.
Caution would come out on lap 9 for a spin by Stephen Childress in turn 4. On the restart Terry and Adkins went back at with point leader Wayne Suite in tow. The battle between Terry and Adkins had the fans on their feet as Terry worked to keep Adkins at bay. On lap 12 Adkins got inside Terry and the two raced side by side until Adkins took the lead by inches on lap 14 at the line.
A quick caution closed the field on Adkins, on the restart Adkins began to pull away as Terry kept Suite behind him for third. Terry got one more shot at Adkins when caution came out on lap 17, setting up a three lap dash for the win.
On the final restart Suite almost got second but Terry was able to hold the spot as Adkins pulled away. Adkins cruised on to his second win of the season. Rounding out the top five were Bob Terry, Wayne Suite, Wesley Givens and Marty Coltrain. Wayne Suite picked up the Thurston Spring Service Dirt Series Rookie of the Race Award with his third place finish.
Bill Sawyer's Virginia Motor Speedway returns to action Thursday May 1st and will host the 2nd Annual Paul Sawyer Memorial presented by Thurston Spring Service, Inc. The night's events will include the return of the Advance Auto Parts Super Dirtcar Series big block modifieds for a history making $10,000 to win, 60 lap race and a $5000 to win, 40 lap Super Late Model event.
Adding to the excitement will be the addition of NASCAR stars Kenny Schrader and Kenny Wallace. Schrader will pilot his super late model and Wallace to return to the seat of a big block modified.
Competitor gates for Thursday, May 1st will open at 4pm with spectator gates opening at 5pm. On track activities will begin at 6:45pm with hot laps. Divisions scheduled to race on Thursday May 1st: Advance Auto Parts Super Dirtcar Series (60 Laps) and Super Late Models (40 Laps). Advance Auto Parts Super Dirtcar Series will run a complete SDS format. Super Late Models will run Hot Lap Time Trials (Top 14 set for 'A' Main), Heats, B Main and Feature.
