Bill Roth PADUCAH, Ky. (April 25) - Less than ideal Friday night weather did not keep 130 racecars and throngs of fans away from PIR as Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Ken Schrader, and Kenny Wallace were on hand for autographs and to talk racin'. For the second time this season, Wallace competed in the Modified division. The NASCAR trio's appearance culminated in a brief interview session on the front straightaway in front of a grandstand full of devotees.
UMP Modifieds Wallace finished a strong third in the feature race, behind local drivers Jeff Elliott and Randle Sweeney. Heat winners were Sweeney, Gabriel Kirtley, and Bryce Jewell. Jeff McGuins won the Semi Feature. In the second heat, Emmett Groves was shaken up when his Modified flipped twice.
UMP Late Models John Tindal captured the main event ahead of Jason McBride and Joe Mike III. Heat race winners were Terry English, who later had problems in the feature event, and Jeff Glisson.
UMP Crate Late Models At the checkered flag, it was an "English sandwich" around second place Tait Davenport. Troy English got the win and Tanner English was third. Heat race wins went to Davenport, Peyton Coleman, and youngster, Tanner English.
UMP Street Stocks Pancho Elder was victorious in a green-white-checkered final restart over Terry Jones and Keith Mayo. Mayo, Clay Story, and Dickey Dooms were heat race winners.
4 Cylinder Warriors Heat races were won by Keaton Downing and Jaren Frick. The feature event was rained out and will be added to the Thursday, May 1 racing program, making it a double feature night for the Warriors.
Vintage Racers The feature race was another victim of the late evening rain. Earlier, Dale Johnson and Mark Moore were heat race winners. The Vintage make-up feature has been added to the Friday, May 9 program, when double feature events will be staged for the division.
The next event at PIR will be a special Thursday night six-division program with heats and features for the UMP Late Models, Modifieds, Crate Late Models, and Street Stocks, along with the 4 Cylinder Warriors and the first season appearance of the Super Cell Mini Sprints. There will be no racing at PIR on Friday, May 2.
NASCAR Stars Dale Earnhardt, Jr, Ken Schrader, and Promoter Bob Sargent purchased Paducah International Raceway in November of 2005. Two-time NASCAR Champion Tony Stewart joined the trio of co-owners as a partner in September of 2006. In 2008 the 3/8th mile high-banked oval will host several high profile events including three NASCAR Nights of Stars, the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars, the USA World 50, and the Tri-Track Challenge. PIR races every Friday night and is located off Interstate 24 at exit 11 in Paducah, Kentucky. For more information call the PIR hotline at (270) 448-4PIR or the track at (270) 898-SHOW (7469).
