Dave Seay JAMAICA, Va. (April 11) - Bill Sawyer's Virginia Motor Speedway has always been good to Jeremy Miller of Gettysburg, PA, with multiple $10,000 to win victories at the ½ mile speed plant in Jamaica, VA will ever compare to getting his first World of Outlaws victory in the Rumble on the River 4.
Billy Moyer of Batesville, AR came into the evening's event as the hottest driver on the circuit, capturing three wins in a row. Early on in the 50 lap affair it looked as if Moyer was going to cruise to a fourth win. Miller had other ideas. The races first caution came out for a spinning Chub Frank as he raced Miller and defending Champion Steve Francis for second.
On the lap 14 restart Miller stayed right with Moyer and began to move around to find the way around the leader. Several tries were turned back by Moyer as Francis lay in waiting.
At the halfway point Moyer held a slim car length advantage over Miller. Behind the leaders the action was fierce as Shane Clanton, Clint Smith and Josh Richards battled for fourth through sixth.
On lap 33 Miller made his move to the inside of Moyer coming out of turn 2 and finished the pass at the line taking over the top spot. Moyer was determined to get the lead back and wrestled the lead back on lap 35. Miller just as determined worked back to the inside with Francis joining in on the battle for the lead.
Once out front Miller began to pull away from the battle between Moyer and Francis for second. Francis finally got inside Moyer on lap 42 to take second. On lap 44 Miller began working heavy traffic, allowing Francis and Moyer to close in. On lap 45 the races final caution came out for Moyer, who shredded a left rear tire relegating him to pit road for repairs.
On the races final restart Miller got a great restart pulling two car lengths as the field headed back into turn 1 for the final five laps. With the fans on there feet and cheering him on Miller cruised to his first World of Outlaws Late Model feature win.
"What a feeling, this track has been so good to me in the past but to get our first Outlaws victory here at Virginia Motor Speedway makes this extra special. What a track, you could run anywhere on it, I have to tip my hat to the staff for providing such a great track," commented a very excited Miller in victory lane.
Rounding out the top five were Steve Francis, Josh Richards, Clint Smith and Shane Clanton.
In other action Matt Marshall of Stuarts Draft, VA led flag to flag, holding off Bret Hamilton of Powhatan, VA on a caution and checkers finish picking up his second win in as many races. Marshall dominated the first 23 laps of the event only to have caution fall with two to go setting up a two lap dash for the victory. On the restart Marshall held Hamilton at bay, but Hamilton kept the pressure on and was working inside Marshall for the lead win the caution fell for the last time necessitating a yellow and checkers finish.
Rounding out the top five were Bret Hamilton, Page Harrison, Wayne Taylor and Josh Harris. Matt Marshall also picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race Award with his victory.
In the Truckin Thunder Sportsman 25 lap finale Kenny Moreland jumped out to the lead with Tim Shelton and Roger Jamerson following to second and third. With Moreland in control Shelton worked to hold off Jamerson as the two raced for second. On lap 3 Jamerson spun to bring out the caution, sending him to the rear of the field.
Another quick caution reset the field again with Moreland leading Shelton back to the green, this time Shelton dove to the inside of the young driver, wrestling the top spot away out of turn 2. Once out front Shelton remained in control, picking up the victory by almost two second over the rest of the field.
Rounding out the top five were Roger Jamerson, Kenny Moreland, Stephen Childress and J.R. Guy. Stephen Childress picked up the Thurston Spring Service Rookie of the Race Award with his fourth place finish.
