Chub Frank Racing BEAR LAKE, Penn. (March 31) - Chub Frank was happy to be back in action for the first time in six weeks last weekend, but his long trip to southern Mississippi for the 'March Through Dixie 100' at Pike County Speedway didn't bring him any additional enjoyment.
A quiet eighth-place finish in the extra-distance World of Outlaws Late Model Series event wasn't what Chub was looking for after traveling more than 1,000 miles from his home base in Bear Lake, Pa.
"It's not much fun when you drive 21 hours and run a race like we did (on Saturday night)," said Chub, who made his first career start at the three-eighths-mile oval in Magnolia, Miss. "We were just out there making laps."
With passing difficult on the high-banked track, Chub improved just one position from his ninth starting spot over the 100-lap grind. The eighth-place run was his second top-10 finish in three WoO LMS A-Mains this season and worth $2,500, but he was frustrated about being unable to move forward even though he felt good behind the wheel of his Lester Buildings/Corry Rubber/All Star Performance/Corry Laser/Slavic Corporation/Farr MotorSports/Lake Shore Paving/Custom Race Engines Chevrolet Impala SS Rocket Chassis No. 1*.
Chub has never been a fan of racing on dirt tracks that sport a clay surface with a sandy consistency - and Pike County, like many speedways throughout the Southeast, fit that description.
Noting that freight trains could be seen running on tracks close to Pike County Speedway, Chub said, "I wish they'd load up those railcars over there with real good clay and bring it in here to put down. The racing will be better than it is on the sandy stuff that these southern tracks have."
Chub's run did move him up to fifth in the WoO LMS points standings, 44 markers out of the lead. He'll try to close that gap when he continues his chase of the Outlaws schedule this weekend (April 4-5) in the first-ever 'Illini 100' at Farmer City (Ill.) Raceway, where a $20,000 top prize will be on the line.
