Mary Jane Cardwell WAYCROSS, Ga. (March 29) - Fans, drivers and officials finally caught a break from Mother Nature as the National Late Model Series thundered into Waycross Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 29, 2008 for a $4,000.00-to-win feature event. Fuel and tires were subjected to extra checks just to keep everyone honest and to squelch the rumors.
As qualifying began, Dusty Cone set the mark for the evening and no one was able to meet his challenge as Dusty remained the Optima Trailers Fastest Qualifier. With qualifying over, three Mary Jane Cardwell Heat Races were set. In the first heat Dusty Cone took the lead and never looked back. Gene Ross stayed with Dusty, but was never able to pass him. Jimmy Lee Davis took the early lead for Heat 2 and never looked back. Mark Whitener did all he could to try and pass him, but never had a chance. Mark Carter held the pole and took the lead in Heat 3, fending off Brandon DeWitt and Tyler Ivey.
With the heats over, the field was set. Dusty Cone held the pole position with Jimmy Lee Davis on the outside pole position. Jimmy Lee Davis took the lead immediately and never gave anyone a shot at him. Further back in the field, Mark Whitener slowly and surely worked his way closer to the front - earning a third place finish. Toby Justice tried hard to climb through the field, but early problems left him sidelined for most of the race. Brandon DeWitt and Cale Simons also faced early problems and spent much of the race in their pits.
The Series welcomed a new Associate Sponsor at this race and awarded gift certificates for Racecar Engineering to Jimmy Lee Davis, Scott Johnson, Ben Faircloth and Brandon DeWitt. The Series extends a warm welcome and we look forward to working with Racecar Engineering.
At this time, the month of April is a bit slow for the Series. However, May is filled to the brim. Next up, May 3, 2008 at the new Cochran Motor Speedway. Watch the website just in case we can schedule an April race ya'll.
