Mary Jane Cardwell ALBANY, Ga. (March 22) - The racing season for the National Late Model Series picked up again at the Albany Motor Speedway, Albany, Georgia on Saturday, March 22, 2008. The Series was making its first return to the track in several years and its first appearance on the new dirt surface. Track officials provided a surface for racing and the group that joined Series officials on the Easter weekend had a great racing experience. Jay Johnson in the 1 car handily took the pole with a 14.94 and showed the rest of the field that he considered this track his track. Jay was the Optima Trailers Fastest Qualifier for the evening. However, Mark Whitener was not that far behind with a 15.16 and promised a fight to the finish. In this "Bristol" of the South Georgia dirt tracks, bumping and shoving were the words of the game. The field took off and Mark Whitener quickly jumped to the lead. He was not safe though as Brandon Cameron and J.R. Moseley kept the pressure on all night. Not to be left out, Jeremy Faircloth also kept his engine heard as he spent much of the race on two tires and worked through the field, several times three wide between turns three and four. The fifty-lap feature got well into 38 laps before a series of cautions slowed the feature. Back in the pack, Steve Jones, Jay Carpenter, Lark Haskins and Chuck Chitty kept the action interesting, passing and passing and keep the fans on the edge of their seats. Facing a green, white, checkered situation, drivers mid pack tried all they could to pass and get closer to the front, causing a pile up on two separate occasions. At the end of the race, Mark Whitener managed to hold on to the lead and take the checkered. His timing could not have been better as the drive shaft broke as he coasted into turn one at the conclusion - the winner! As many present can attest, this new old track is good. Racing is swift and wide. Keep up the good work Albany. Next up for the National Late Model Series - Waycross and maybe Mother Nature will let us race this time.
