Delph Communications BATESVILLE, Ark. (March 19) - Wendell Wallace and his #88 team trekked to the Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway in Calvert City, Kentucky from March 13-15 for the inaugural running of 'March Madness.' Two of the three scheduled events were put into the record book over the weekend, as the $10,000 to win finale on Saturday, March 15 was won by Mother Nature.
The driver known as the "Batesville Bullet" was extremely quick in the two preliminary shows on Thursday and Friday, March 13 and 14. On Thursday, Wendell ran second in his heat race before rolling off fifth for the $5,000 to win A-Main. During the course of the 'March Madness' feature event, Wendell had moved his #88 GRT / Gaerte entry up to the third spot by lap 16 before encountering distributor problems, which caused him to retire from the race with a disappointing twenty-first place finish.
A much better night awaited the #88 team on Friday night in round two of 'March Madness' at KLMS. Wendell was second fastest in his group during UMP DIRTcar Series qualifying and later won his heat race. After rolling off from the inside of the third row for the 40-lap feature event, Wendell once again got as high as third in the $5,000 to win show before settling for a solid fifth place performance behind winner Billy Moyer, Michael England, Dennis Erb, and David Scott. "Our car was real good all weekend at Kentucky Lake, but we should have finished higher in both of the shows," commented Wallace this week. "I thought we had a legitimate shot at winning on Thursday until the distributor problems took us out of contention. Then on Friday, I got up to third and the panhard bar got bent. Actually, we were lucky to even finish the race on Friday because in a few more laps it would have broken."
The Wendell Wallace Autosports team is now gearing up for the annual 'Tuckasee Toilet Bowl Classic' this Friday and Saturday, March 21-22. The Clarksville Speedway in Clarksville, Tennessee will play host to the UMP DIRTcar Series race and a $10,000 top prize is up for grabs in the feature event on Saturday, March 22. In addition to the lucrative winnings, the victor also receives a custom Toilet Bowl for recognition of the triumph.
