Lavonia Speedway LAVONIA, Ga. (March 17) - For a first in dirt late model history FASTRAK joins "LATE MODEL MANIA". The race will be held in conjunction with the Southern All Stars and also the Southeastern Late Model Series making it the first event of its type in history. ALL LATE MODELS ALL WEEKEND LONG!
Fans, teams and sponsors have been calling. The interest level is intense as fans from as far away as OH as coming down for the weekend. "I have people calling me from all over the country" said Lavonia Speedway Promoter Brad York. "People are bringing their campers and staying the entire weekend". There is plenty of room for camping at the Lavonia Speedway facility.
Having one of their best years in racing local hero Royce Bray will be making his way to Lavonia as well. Bray has already had a spectacular season participating in some of the larger 'off season' events in the nation. Bray won the coveted "Ice Bowl" in Talladega AL. Not only did he win, but his crate engine car was actually faster than the super late models during the race. Bray then went to Modoc Speedway in SC to take his second feature win. The next weekend brought the "Jimmy Thomas Memorial" to the forefront with Bray taking a 3rd place finish in that event.
The FASTRAK late model series will hold open practice on Friday night along with the other classes. After practice is completed the FASTRAK cars will take to the track for their qualifying efforts. Saturday will bring about qualifying for both SLMS and SAS with heats to follow along with the FASTRAK heats and consi's. Then the features begin.
The Southern All Stars Series is one of the more popular Super Late Model series in the nation featuring teams like Chris Madden, GR Smith and Rambo Franklin among others. SAS always brings a huge crowd to follow their events. SAS purse will be $5000 to win.
The Southeastern Late Model Series, one of the newer series in the country will be racing for $1200 to win. The SLMS is a steel headed limited late model class owned and operated by Randy McCoy of NC. SLMS enjoyed a very successful first year in 2007.
Lavonia Speedway has a brand new clay surface that was tested this past Friday night. The track held up well and dust just wasn't an issue. Cars were quick and able to race all over the 3/8th mile facility.
Saturday's events will prove unique as immediately after hot laps every late model will enter the front straight 2x2 and park around the track. Drivers will then exit their cars and come to the grandstands for a thirty minute autograph session. Once the session is concluded, kids will have their chance at an Easter egg hunt in the grandstands while the teams are making last minute adjustments. Heat races start immediately thereafter.
