Delph Communications MENOMONIE, Wisc. (March 7) - Jimmy Mars, of Menomonie, Wisconsin, traveled west to the Dirt Track at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada last week for the annual 'Las Vegas Dirt Classic.' Jimmy, who swept the two-day event in 2007, picked up the win in night one at LVMS last Thursday, February 28. Aboard Jess Anderson's #H2 MasterSbilt from Mars entry, he was fourth quickest overall in Western Allstars Series qualifying and later won his heat race. After starting from the pole position for the 30-lap feature event, Jimmy beat Scott James, Tim McCreadie, Trevor Glaser, and Steve Drake to the checkers to record the $3,000 payday!
The driver known across the Dirt Late Model community as the "Iceman" then vied for a second straight sweep of the 'Las Vegas Dirt Classic' on Friday, February 29, as the Western Allstars Series sanctioned another $3,000 to win show. Jimmy was seventh quickest overall in time trials and later won his heat race. Following a third place performance in the dash, he rolled off from the inside of the second row for the 30-lap A-Main. In the opening laps of the main event, Jimmy's recent luck in Vegas ran out, as he was hit by another competitor and knocked out of the race with a broken tie-rod. He was relegated to a disappointing twenty-second place effort in the final night of the 'Las Vegas Dirt Classic.' You can view full results online at www.latemodelracer.com.
"It was another fun weekend in Vegas, aside from the incident that took us out of contention on Friday night," commented Mars after returning back to Wisconsin. "Jess (Anderson) provides me with great equipment when I travel out west and I have to thank him for everything. The track was quite a bit tackier than it has been in the past, but I prefer when it gets nice and slick. Unfortunately that was not the case last week, but we still got a win and I think we would have been right there in the mix on Friday night as well. Luck just wasn't on our side I guess…"
Jimmy and his own #28 Dirt Late Model team are scheduled to open up their version of the 2008 racing season in a few short weeks at the Pike County Speedway in Magnolia, Mississippi. The World of Outlaws Late Model Series will sanction a two-day, $20,000 to win show at Pike County on March 28-29. The last time Jimmy visited the Mississippi oval, he reached victory lane, as he captured the win in the $30,000 'Jambalaya 100' last November!
